Deitz 15" cab-speaker wattage?

12
Obviously, I don't turn the Master volume to 10, not even to 12 o'clock.
But if I turn the master volume way down and the input gain way up, I get essentially the same overall level(power) as if I turned the input gain way down and the master volume way up. In both cases I can get a coil-killing distortion no?

Looking at the block Diagram of the GK 400RB II (here) it seems like there's no pre-amp for the amp and that the input gain is just an input attenuator. The master volume is before the output/power amp.

So I still don't get it, how can I make my GK not distort so it wouldn't burn my speakers. If it clips in the input stage, it would clip in the output stage as well, no matter what are the volume control settings(unless one control is turned all the way down).

I think i'm complicating things, but dunno, maybe i'm just paranoid.

thanks for any inpupt,
eliya

distortion is clipping. if you think that all overdriven, distorted, or fuzzy sounds "sound bad", then yeah, clipping sounds bad universally. otherwise, if you like any amount of distortion, then you like clipping. it's not a black or white thing.

allow me to clarify, speaker clipping sounds bad. that's pretty black and white.

I'm pretty sure you can find posts on this forum with people declaring how much they like the sound of speaker breakup. I'm pretty sure Tim talked about using speaker breakup to compensate for solid-state amps' general inability to get a good dirty tone just a few posts back in this thread. So no, that's really not black and white either.

speaker clipping on bass. not through a baritone. not for a guitar. speaker clipping on a bass.

I can think of some tasty speaker clipping with bass.

Peter Hook in the Joy Division days? Hiwatt DR103 into a 4X12 with Celestion 30's. There's a bit of speaker clipping on bass there. He's hitting a max total 120 watt cab with a guitar head that he's playing bass through. I read somewhere he had everything on 10 with that set up.

Fred Erskine in Hoover/Crown Hate Ruin. I believe he played with an Ampeg 8X10 and GK800RB that had several (eventually) blown speakers due to him clipping the speakers with his dubby fingerstyle.

Mike Watt, early Minutemen stuff when he's playing with a pick and a Peavey head.

(perhaps none of this is really speaker clipping, but it ain't just the head..)
