I have been brainstorming options for recording bigger bands live. I have a great laundry room that is in mic cable reach (50'+) but not decent instrument cable reach. Is there an obvious way to use one or two direct boxes to bridge the distance without killing the signal?

I believe that two good transformer based DI's will do the job. Can't tell how much it's going to color the sound if it would at all.

Di the bass then reamp after tracking?

Seconded. Any other way is trying too hard.
I drilled a hole in my floor so I could put my Cab in the basement. Now when you go to do laundry, you see a 1/4" cable hanging from the middle of the ceiling.

so a 50' speaker cable would be no cause for concern?......now if I can just find one in that basement, or buy a cheap one.

50' speaker cable is no cause for concern, if it's large gauge wire. Otherwise (especially if you're pushing a lot of power to the speakers), you'll start loosing the damping factor, and the bass will start sounding mushy. I found the cheapest way to make a high-capacity speaker cable is to buy a heavy-duty extension cable from your local hardware store and replace the connectors.
