Common Guitar Amp Fuses...

1
Greg might be the best person to answer this,
since I know Electrical has an incredible stock
of electronic parts, but I'd welcome any help.

I was wondering if there's common guitar amp
fuses that I could stock at my studio... I had
someone blow one last week, and just tonight
the guitarist blew one and had someone racing
to Radio Shack at 20 minutes 'til closing.

I was unable to Google this effectively, but was
wondering how universal fuses are, or if someone
could point me somewhere where there might be
a list of fuse types for common amps (e.g. Fender
Twin, Vox AC 30, Mesa Dual Rectifier, Marshall
JCM 800 / 900, etc.).

The retarded thing is that I've played guitar for
20 years and been recording bands for 15 and this
has never occurred to me.

Thanks,
Fred

In general:
50W or less - 1A slow blow
90W or less 2A slow blow
100-150W 2.5 or 3A slow blow

Although, it depends on the amp.

Somewhat of a rule of thumb (in the US)

take amp wattage, multiply * 5/2, divide by 120, and that's roughly your amperage. Then get a slow-blow fuse. This is because tube amps are ~50% efficient, meaning they use ~100 watts to get 50. P = IV, where V =120V and I is the current (1A in the case of a 50W amp)

The actual fuses is usually the cylindrical ones, I can't remember the actual size.

Thanks Juice...

Then another question... are there only two standard
sizes?I know an old Ampeg of mine used the same size
(roughly) as a Marshall uses, but I recently had a
blown fuse on an AC-30 and it was much tinier, almost
half that size.

I guess I could shop around online and see what's what.
Thanks,
Fred

bigger amps can use pretty crazy fuses. between the traynors, marshalls, and ampegs I have over 100W, I need to have 7A, 8A, and 10A fuses as well. lots use 5A too.

and then yeah, 1A, 2A, 3A, you'll see those a lot, too.

schematics pretty much always specify the fuse value, so look em up for whatever amps you wanna be ready for.

schematicheaven.com and prowess-amplifiers.com have loads of schematics for just about every amp you'll see.
