TOO MANY BANDS

I watched "We Jam Econo" last night. There's a part where the Minutemen are getting spit on, getting cords unplugged, and they continued to play. Are you convinced that bands who believe in what they are doing would simply quit because of this? I don't.

While I agree there are a lot of bands, and many of them are bad, to suggest that there are "too many" always strikes me as peculiar.

agreed, those with conviction at least have that. how many have you seen that lack conviction? for me, it's all too many.

the increase in numbers just makes it more difficult, not easier. which is a bummer.

And who says my taste or your taste is better than someone else's?

I find this argument interesting - the idea that there should somehow be limits on many types of medium: music, art, who can have children, etc.

What makes someone "qualified" to express themselves via their music?

It's all so subjective...it's a matter of you try telling them.

Thing to keep in mind, most bands don't come out of the womb fully formed...you do kinda have to go from point A to point B...it's when you're not getting to point B that you should maybe consider something else.

Still, I often think that there are too many bands, but if all we had were pre-existing bands- as in no new bands forming- things'd get real dull real fast.
You call me a hater like that's a bad thing

I think this would (and did) seperate the "men from the boys"... in the early days of the hi-fi we played many shows to 10 or less people... I remember driving from San Fran to somewhere in AZ and having to beg the promoter for $20.00 and then get in a van and drive 22 hours home, we were not the smartest band on the block, but we believed in what we were doing, and that got us through alot...

I have been spit on... I just spit right back...

It might separate the men from the boys, but it doesn't do anything to address the issue of whether a band is good or not. Because the 2nd side of the "too many bands" coin is that there are too many BAD bands. So, you proved that you have integrity and aren't going to go away willingly, but does it say anything about the quality of music you're creating and whether it is bettering or worsening this perceived conundrum?
