yep, I shoulda left it alone.

I should have asked about dance genres. How many of them are there?

my point is that there seems to be a trend by which people commit to a sub-genre ( " i listen blackened doom " ) and then any number of bands within that.

I disagree. I think that these kids are playing Guitar Hero and NOT picking up real guitars because Guitar Hero is much more instantly gratifying.

While I admit there is a lot of crappy music/bands I would rather not hear (or play shows with), I think that the more kids who are picking up a instrument and trying to apply themselves to it and trying to create something with it and with their friends, that is just fucking awesome. It beats having a bunch of kids walking around quoting every episode of South Park and Family Guy.

They're picking up "Guitar Hero" because they wouldn't dream of picking up an actual guitar.

Too many bands that suck there have always been a much higher number of suck bands than good ones. Let em play and let Tony Danza figure it out. By that I mean the Stooges and Ramones end up being the cuturally important bands vs the large number of crappy bands all of them more successful at the time.

Be in a band for the sake of making music, no problem.

Be in a band for the sake of being in a band (and all that entails - gigs, records, fans, reviews, selling tight-fitting t-shirts to attractive young women with unnaturally coloured hair, etc) and you have yourself a problem.

"There are so many bands that nobody is paying attention to my band! Wah, wah, wah!" is more like it.
I walk these streets, a loaded six-string on my back.
