Band: Urge Overkill

I first found this forum through a discussion thread that Steve Albini started at the 2+2 forums in which he invited questions about his career and industry. Anyway, several of his answers were "Urge Overkill" and the questions were NOT good.

Personally, the only song I own or even know by them is whatever they put on that No Alternative compilation from the early nineties, so don't have much of an opinion on them. But man, if you read some of the stuff Steve says about them in that thread...he just crucifies them!!!

I'm sure people have brought this up a million times, but just in case not here's a link:

The thread is super duper long so just do search for Urge and you'll see how they get slammed.

Figured as much.

Curious that so many here don't share Steve's opinion about them. Tastes differ and it's not like he gets a monopoly on discerning good from bad. But if he's to be believed, these guys are a COMPLETE JOKE, utter hacks and a certain waste of time. Like I said, I can think of only one song I've heard by them and don't even remember it, but it makes me want to see what the deal is with their music.

i only have 'enter the dragon' and there are a couple of nice songs on there. they could write some good songs when they wanted to.

The album is named Exit the Dragon I believe.

I like a lot of Urge stuff - not familiar with that album aside from the title.

I was in line once with Eddie Roeser at this hot dog place on Damen. I thought it was some homeless guy until I overheard him calling Nash to tell him there was a picture of them in the Red Eye. Must have been a rough night.

Did'nt Steve once ask an interviewer to come back in five years and see which of the two (himself or one of the guys from UO) was still in the business and which was sucking cock for spare change at the bus station? I remember thinking that was maybe the harshest thing I had ever heard someone say in public about another public figure. I still haven't heard their music, so no opinion there.

Some decent songs: "The Kids are Insane"
"The Candidate"
"The Polaroid Doll"
"The Barclords"
"76 Ball"
"God Flintstone"
"Ticket to L.A."
most of "Exit the Dragon"

Douchebags? Dunno. Never met em. Saw them play in Detroit though and it was a treat.

Pretty good for "weiners in suits playing frat party rock, trying to tap a goofy trend that doesn't even exist."
