B-52 s Debut Album

This album is perfect.

I can't stop listening to it.

John Lennon once called it his favorite album. Ricky Williams' detuned guitar style is a clear fore-runner of what Sonic Youth and Polvo would later do with similar techniques. The blending of the female voices sounds so nice. They do this little trick where they'll hit the same pitch and then one of them will modulate to a slightly lower tone, creating the same "buzz" effect you get when you play two simultaneous notes on separate guitar strings. Reminds me a bit of what John and Exene used to do in X.

When Cindy goes, "Why won't you dance with me? I'm not no limburger!" this weird mood sets in. From the words it would seem like it's just some retro Frankie Vallie shit, but the way she sings it makes it sound like she's totally desperate. And angry. I can't put my finger on it, but the song is just really, really sad. Just when you don't expect it to be.

This album isn't gay-sounding at all. Not that gay-sounding is bad. It's just not campy, I mean. It's fierce and dark and alluring.

It's in the running for best album ever. Sho' nuff.

Ricky Wilson is listed in the credits as playing electric guitar and smoke alarm. Not crap. He grouped the strings of his guitar into a bass course and a treble course, as the band didn't have a bass player at first. Interesting guitarist. I don't really like any B-52's post him though.

I disagree that this album doesn't sound gay. Anything with Fred Schneider on it will sound gay. All of the male members of this band were gay I think. Not that anything is wrong with that...

This is a gay record in that it sounds super gay and like there's some serious party underway with a lot of things happening in different rooms and some random pills on the coffee table. It's just not camp. Gay without camp might be the best kind of party record.

Agree that Ricky Wilson was a unique and brilliant guitarist.

So good record. So good.

weird. I actually have this out of the library and was listening to it for the first time recently. What a great record. It's so funny. I was expecting it to be a bit more dancey, but I don't care.

ricky wilson had some great ideas. I've never heard of anyone else doing that with a guitar and making it sound good.

totally not crap. I love it. it makes me happy!
Life...life...I know it's got its ups and downs.
