Movie: The Rules of Attraction

Never saw any reason to read the book (or any other by Bret Easton Ellis, despite thinking Less Than Zero was the coolest thing ever as an uncool 7th grader in the eighties). Anyway, I saw this one in the theater, and watched it again on cable this week. I like the twisted humor, thought the europe travelogue was a great few minutes. The gay guy was sadly sympathetic. The Dawsons Creek guy is credible as the younger brother of American Psycho. Some of the dialogue is clever.

However, everyone I know HATES this movie. I suspect that they might be onto something, and that some toolish aspect of me is falling for some overly stylish and completely vacant crap. Don't know for sure.

couldn't really deal with the narration... some people criticize goodfellas and casino for the voice-over narration in those films; i love those movies, but anyone who doesn't like those voice-overs is sure to not like this film.

but otherwise NC. surprising plot on many levels. obviously avary knows what he's doing... too bad he may have run over someone with his car a few months ago.

You might be right, I don't know. If it's a masquerade, I think it does a pretty good job of faking being something more than it is. Still, would not be surprised if five or ten years from now I feel it's an obvious flaming shitpie.

But the Dawsons Creek guy - ok, I know his name is James Van Der Beek and one of my balls just shrunk from admitting it - does a lot more than swear - he inhabits an entirely different character from whatever crap he was playing on the WB. I think it's a great performance.

My delicately worded critique was more a reaction to the wrist flapping 'ooh, he's edgy' attitude of the critics and audience rather than his performance which is pretty good.
They talk by flapping their meat at each other.
