danmohr,

not disagreeing whether the JC-120 is or is not the shit but substituting the Vox in its place? If that were the case I could have saved some money on my JC-77 purchase (or visa versa).

Love my Vox, but its clean sound (ya know .8 on the 1 to 10 scale), while plenty loud, does not have the same tone as a JC...and sometimes you want _that_ sound.

Others on the jazz forums do not like the JC either and offer up an amp called "The Brute" or something.

Regards,
spoon

Oh forgot to add, thanks for that link....I havent laughed this hard at work since I found StrongBad emails......precious.

Ah. I'm really not experienced in the clean sounds that electric guitar amplifiers are capable of producing. I think the Vox is a somewhat singular amp in its ability to maintain a volume setting that allows the player's own dynamics to dictate whether a given note or chord comes out on the clean side or the overdriven side. This may be just a factor of the way the gain stages are lined up on an AC30; I can't really pretend I know the technical reason for this ability. The AC30s capacity for treble is also kind of unmatched, though it has a couple of drawbacks in that a) it seems quite finicky about your pickups' load characteristics and b) it's not so much in the low end. It brings the "shard" ala Television quite nicely (I suppose that's why Television uses them) and is also brutally heavy (as in pounds) which I can really get behind. It may be one of the densest amps save for this Mesa Boogie 1x12 combo amp I tried to lift once that must have been pushing 90 pounds - it felt like the fucking case was made out of lead.

I assumed that the JC stood for Jazz Chorus as in the Roland Jazz Chorus 120 (JC-120). The user reviews section at Harmony Central confirms that Roland did indeed make a Jazz Chorus 77 amp:

JC-77

Note: The referencing of the Harmony Central user reviews section is merely given as proof that this amp exists not as an endorsement of that particular forum (which I find repulsive - equal parts collector scum snobbery and abject ignorance [as you may guess, I prefer my snobbery undiluted]).

Oh, right. I was just making sure you weren't going to rave about the JCM (800,900, or 2000) clean sound. honestly it sounds horrible to me. actually I think the overdrive channels also sound ridiculously plain.
