Best Budget condenser mic?

I have a kickBall... The red one... The Blue "Balls" series are ok for the price. If I remember correctly the last time I attempted to try a Blue ball, I used it on a clean electric guitar... I had Ok results...Try it as a drum OH.... You may find the results OK as well.

They are nothing spectacular... but for $40 Im sure you will find a use for it at some point when recording.... and if you dont.. then you can always play roller hockey with it.

Oh and a word of advice if you dont have the shockmount... dont buy it. They make the Mic way to heavy and if you have a cheap mic stand... it will never stay in place.....

I use a big fat CAD mic, an "Equitek e-100" I don't know, is that like really "low budget?" I never hear people talking about them.

It sounds really good on other people's vocals, but usually really bad on mine. I also recorded damn near a whole bluegrass record with it, worked really well on the acoustic instruments.

re: http://media.putfile.com/mca-sp1-test-2

The stock MCA SP1's sound really good as drum overheads. The designer of the Chameleon Labs tube SDC mics did a review on the MCA's in a TapeOp review and thought they were excellent. I'd hold off on the Jim Williams mod and use them straight from the blister pack for a while.

If have a link or something to the tapeOp article or something that I can read?

MCA SP1 review is in TapeOp issue #60, July/Aug 2007. Not available online. Reveiwer is Terry Settle, who apparently participated in the design of the Chameleon Labs TS-1, reviewed in the same issue.

In the clip mentioned above, the SP1's used as drum overheads sounded good...to me. Note that the SP1's capsule is closer in size to a SDC, not LDC. SDC's don't work so well on vox.
