Ok, so the Hi-Fi have a sampler (we have two DR Samples) we mostly sample oursevles, making noises with effect pedals... I really like the idea of a sampler as an instrument, however we vastly under use our samplers, right now we have a song that could use some 8-bit type video game noises, are there any web sites that have cleared samples I can get my hands on? or any sites that have sampled sounds that are so old they are fair use by now?

I just bought an Mac Labtop, so if there are programs you kids use to manipulate stuff let me know, esp if you have a pitchshifter/harmonizer type stuff...

Come to the Chicago Cultural Center before a classical or Jazz concert and sit in the audience seats with a small recorder while the orchestra or band tunes or does sound check. You can record huge, reverb drenched swells of random instruments that are completely legal to use if not completely unidentifiable. I have volumes of this shit at home.

World Music Fest (late september) is a great time to get strange shit and we have multiple concerts a week, year round.

from what I gather, that is basically what the free sound project site is about, people record just about anything, and upload them for free use. from thunder, and rain, to busy subway stations.

sampling cd-rom!

just check out if your sampler reads the format of the cd-rom.

I've used and uploaded to the freesound project. Its a great little site.

I like making and using my own samples much more than 'finding' them, though.

Buy a cheap cassette recorder and leave it within reach at home/bring it with you when traveling in case you hear something you like. Sample micro-seconds and short bursts of sound, just leave the thing running someplace while you sleep. The possibilities are endless. Want to up the quality a bit? Record some from your comp or buy a decent portable wave recorder. If you sample yourself, no need to worry about copyright. Or, sample from something that may/may not be copyrighted and warp/pitch change/whatever until its indistinguishable and you have a brand new sound.

I would perfer this also but I don't have the equipment to make videogame noises, I also do not have any processing software, so I am kind of starting out on this...
