Im looking for the final peice to add to my home studio. I want to be able to get more variety/ color out of my recoridngs. Ive gotten a lot of good advice at this site and im wondering what people might suggest.
Im thinking of adding another nice mic (a beyer M160 or an AKG C414) or one or two nice colored sounding preamps. Heres what I have:
Tascam TSR-8
Allen & Heath Mixwizard
Sennheiser MD 421
AKG D112
Beyer M201
2x AT 4040s
SM 57
DBX 266 comp/gate
MXR Digital Time delay
M-Audio soundcard
any suggestions on a nice colored-sounding preamp would be great.
Im also not happy with the vocals ive been getting with the 4040 or the MD421. or anything else you could think of. thanks.
What am I missing?
2Personally I like mics in pairs especially with ribbon mics. I find those to be very very useful in may different ways with no great substitute. If you decide to get the Beyer M160, get two.
Yeah, preamps...sure. How much more money have you got? Sytek MPX-4As are great in many and most situations (strong quiet gain for ribbons and other dynamics as well as nice option for phantom powered condensers) and are somewhat affordable 4 channel preamps ($800 new?). I use mine every day.
I am sure we could all figure ways of spending your money very easily.

3With what you have I would go for an M160 over a 414, the AT mics are nice condensers. although I don't know what your room is like... If you go for Mayfair's suggestion and buy two mics, you might want to consider an M130 to go with the M160. I don't think you can do M-S stereo with what you have. I would definitely miss that. On the other hand I would also miss not having any omni mics...
The Sytek preamp is a great value. They are accurate, with lots of headroom. Mine came with burr brown ICs in channels 3 and 4, which gives you more flexibility. 1 and 2 sound more detailed, 3 and 4 sound fuller. It's a great preamp for the beyer ribbons. I wouldnt say it's "nice coloured", I would say it's nice.

4Milkfajen,
I have a new 4 channel Sytek with the 2 channels of burr browns on 3 and 4. I have had them for about 3 months and found that I dont use them at all and am looking to sell them. If anyone is interested email.
