I didn't go to a fancy art school. Rather I attended a modest-but-solid state university, pursuing a BFA through their film department. Consequently I can't really say that I've experienced art school or that I've ever been an art student, definitely not socially -- attending a proper "art school" is, in my opinion, fairly different from majoring in art within a university. (The latter experience is more socially oriented and insular, more insulated from the pressures and indifference of reality but also fairly plagued with its own trappings, which are very real within that milieu, however ridiculous.)

Incidentally, in the interest of full disclosure, my parents paid for my schooling and I used that time wisely.

My parents paid for my tuition but not for most of the materials, which led to a lot of critiques that went like this:

Instructor: I like this, but I wish that you had incorporated *$150 material* into this (minor) project.

Me: I would have liked to have used *$150 material* in my (minor) project, but I was working 30 hours a week in addition to my booked school schedule and decided that the "extra" money was better spent on things like food to nourish me.

my experience with art students = Crap.
that being said, not all art students are crap, i'm sure. some of my best friends are art students
the big trend for art kids around here is to get food stamps. these kids go to one of the most expensive schools in the state, and they get fucking food stamps. the ones i know are only eligible to get about $20 a month, so its really just kind of like some sort of anti-status symbol to them...or something. i'm just now trying to understand it.
and i'm not saying food stamps are bad or whatever. but these are rich and/or well-off kids whose parents pay their tuition/rent/etc.
that being said, i was once in a band called Uppity Art Fag

Spot on.
I'm not one to usually correct grammar, but the truth of your post begged for it.

that's interesting about the food stamp thing...i don't see it as a completely inane thing to do...it's a good way to see how the other half live even if it's only for a measly $20/month...also it's a way for them to be somewhat independent of their rich parents...though getting a job would be better though...

I'm 6/80ths the way to #1.

i could understand that, but the people that i know that do this have jobs or live off their parents regardless of food stamps and aren't really struggling any more than i am. it's more of just something quirky for them to do. and i guess i should have voted Not Crap with a waffle or 2 just for the few art students i've not liked. sorry, Art Students everywhere!
