My favorite Dassin is Thieves’ Highway because of Valentina Cortese. Too, too often Cortese was cast as the darker, less beautiful foil to the box office mega starlet. In this film she does the only thing which makes sense for her to do… draw the male lead away from the glassy Hollywood blonde.

She was a force, and Dassin apparently loved her madly.

Alain Delon was also excellent in Le Samourai and Melodie en Sous-Sol.

I just rewatched Le Samourai and I concur.

A friend of mine got me Rififi for Christmas or my birthday or something. I wasn't at all familiar with the movie or with Dassin, but was pretty damn impressed when I watched it. Definite not crap.
