I assume you're already onto II by II, their loose concept album about the rapture. Man, I love that record.

There's also some really cool stuff on Bill Cowsill's solo album Nervous Breakthrough, if you can find it.

Yup, II x II was actually the one I was listening to, followed by their final album (besides 1998's Global), and my favorite, On My Side. I've got Nervous Breakthrough as well; good record. I have everything they released, save for one or two really hard to find non-LP 45s. Such a strange, great group.

So fucking great. I wish I could write songs like this.

I have loved the Kinks since I was a kid, and as I grow older I am more and more amazed at how songs as sarcastic and snide as these were bona fide hits. There is hope for man, after all.

Seriously.... they made the song "Lola" as part of an album making fun of how stupid the music industry was quickly becoming, and then this song became a massive hit for the band... lol

right now, it's new New Year. I will definitely put up with Minus the Bear to hear these songs live.

The Kinks...here's how I think they made songs like that hits:

Ray's delivery. It's brilliant. If he'd been sneering "Dedicated Follower of Fashion," it would have fell flat and we'd be revering it and them as a cult classic band. But Ray sings it in the lightest, nicest way possible, which somehow takes the sting out of it on the surface - which lets the sheer catchiness of the song come out - but makes it even more brutal on repeated listenings.

Damn. I love that song. And "A Well Respected Man." "Doing all the best things so conservatively..."

Anyway, listening to:

Spacemen 3 - Sound of Confusion

They really didn't have their shit together at this point, but it still has some great songs, like "Losing Touch with My Mind" and the great cover of Glenn Campbell's "Mary Anne."

They played CCR's "Travelin' Band" and fucking "Ramble Tamble" on the radio in the cafeteria today. I mean, "Ramble Tamble"? You never hear that song! I think that is one hell of a good sign.
Life...life...I know it's got its ups and downs.
