It's a 'distraction' for their side too. They can't win by by making white christian heritage their central focus. 'Bring back American jobs/revive the coal industry' is probably what put them over the top in 2016 but since that didn't happen.. at best they can try and make a decent economy (by the overrated metric of unemployment rates at least) their focus. Hammering him/them on racism/xenophobia, as well as the catastrophe at the border, is a good thing.
