You can't help what you like. It's beyond your control to some extent.
It might completely spoil the artist's work for me or it might completely not, and I think a lot of it comes down to how much I care about their work, and also as others have noted in what WAY I care about their work. It might spoil it or it might not, but either way there's not much you can do.
Regarding society as a whole, if you were to rephrase the question as "how much does an artist's status in popular culture affect whether or not that artist is condemned for having sex with children back when 'times were different'," ...based on the evidence I would say the line is drawn somewhere between Rolf Harris and Jimmy Page. Or maybe the issue is that Michael Jackson and Gary Glitter had sex with children in a creepy way whereas Iggy Pop and David Bowie had sex with children in a cool way?
Re: Does an artist's behavior affect your ability to enjoy their music?
42Once I find out an artist is a gross person It's really hard for me to enjoy listening to what they make. It sounds black and white, but I guess there are degrees. How shitty does someone have to be for me to not want to listen to their music? It seems to be a matter of degrees, but I can't help feeling like a bit of a hypocrite in some cases.
Re: Does an artist's behavior affect your ability to enjoy their music?
43The separation is easier somehow when the artist is dead and it's not so much a question of supporting current behavior.
Both Miles Davis and James Brown were guilty of domestic violence (by their own admission, I think) and were said to have treated many people badly. It doesn't diminish their genius in my eyes, and I see no point in discussing said behavior every time I want to listen to their music. However, if I knew a current artist behaved that way, I'd be reluctant to buy concert tickets, records, etc.

44You're right, the news that gun-fellating, Michigan Militia-supporting, Secret Service-baiting chickenhawk @tednugent had contracted a nasty (but tragically nonfatal) case of COVID *months after* vaccine rollout left me speechless with joy. Also, as FM ErickC says, I never gave a shit about the "gonzo" guitar wankery of @tednugent one way or the other, so it seems like shooting fish in a barrel -- something that "canned safari" aficionado and repeat poacher (in one case with an underage deer, as it were) @tednugent would doubtless enjoy.speedie wrote: Tue Jun 08, 2021 1:18 am You quote me, yet talk no shit about Known Pedophile and pants- shitting draft dodger / gun slinging covid denying then getting covid utter fuckface @tednugent.
A friend of mine who grew up in MI had @tednugent's wife as her Girl Scout troop leader, and the troop once had a meeting at The Nuge's residence. She didn't recall anything especially untoward (except, obviously, guns and dead animals all over the place) and only later realized, "Hey, that was pretty fucked up!"

45Smaller things nope.
Ugly shitty people make ugly shitty music and it’s so obvious to see from a mile away, brand new and the smiths are obvious examples

46I’m getting a little sick of seeing favs brazenly advertise what giant pieces of shit they are on platforms like Instagram.
If you’re a musician who made one of my favorite 90s records and you read this board:
- Yes I can tell that you follow women half your age because you’re trying to get laid.
- Yes I have noticed that you deal with breakups by following back attractive young fans.
- Yes I can see that you’re breadcrumbing that woman you hooked up with but don’t want to date.
- Yes it disgusts me and puts me off your music.

47I'm 90% sure I know who you're talking about. It's pretty fucking disappointing to me too.octoberallover wrote: Wed Aug 11, 2021 3:07 pm I’m getting a little sick of seeing favs brazenly advertise what giant pieces of shit they are on platforms like Instagram.

48DIsh!
I still listen to Amebix, even though I just stumbled upon Rob Miller's Holocaust denialism through his current band, Tau Cross. He's really aggressively stupid on Facebook as well, saying people who get the vaccine are sheep. Wow, so clever, never heard that one before! It seems like with certain punks that felt like they were at the vanguard of something back in the day, they're now trying hard to convince themselves and others that they still see things that others don't. So annoying.
