Smashing Pumpkins.

I lived in Chicago from 1986-1990. During this time Smashing Pumpkins always seemed to be opening for bands I actually wanted to see. They played at least 5 or 6 shows at the Metro, maybe the Avalon too. Their music blew chunks and according to friends who worked at the Metro, the band acted like rock star douches (this is before they had any albums out). I don't think I ever sat through an entire set. Whenever they started playing that was our cue to go next door for a drink or walk around the block and smoke a bowl. Good times.

[Anyone remember Slammin' Watusis? God, they sucked like a Hoover too.]

Flash forward to Summer 1994. Our Flagstaff crew is in Phoenix for Lollapalooza. Beastie Boys, George Clinton, Breeders, A Tribe Called Quest, Nick Cave, Green Day, L7, Shonen Knife, Shudder To Think, Stereolab ... and Smashing Pumpkins, riding high off Siamese Dream.

We had all eaten acid earlier in the day and, assuming Beastie Boys would be playing last on the main stage, I dropped another hit toward the end of George Clinton's set, figuring I'd check out the second stage during the Pumpkins and be lysergically primed for Beastie Boys to close the night.

To my dismay the Beasties played second-to-last. As soon as they finished, I moseyed over to the other stage and found it closed, along with most of the booths. I had nowhere to go. Everyone in our crew dug Smashing Pumpkins and wanted to stay for their whole set.

Picture this: Somewhere in America there is a large outdoor concert venue with a popular group playing on stage and thousands of people on their feet dancing and having a great time. In the middle of this crowd there is a severely bummed-out guy sitting on the grass with an empty beer cup, his chin in his palm and a head full of LSD. His knowledge of music theory, greatly amplified and focused by the drug, is allowing him to analyze the exact suckitude of every note being played on stage. He silently hopes the band will break up soon and never create any more music .

It´s tough to pick one. But I think the one band that I really REALLY hate is the Foo Fighters. It´s not just the music...it is the whole package. Fueled by huge disappointment (I loved Nirvana and I really liked the first FF record) sometimes I´m close to smashing the screen whenever that shit band is on. I hate the songs, I hate the sounds, I hate the schtick, I hate that bro shit, I hate the "modesty" and "decency" they (and especially Grohl) try to simulate, I hate "Celebrity Grohl", I hate all the made up bullshit stories they are telling (that everybody knows have never happened the way they tell them), I simply hate everything about that band. Oh, and I fucking hate their fans.

I don´t know what happened to that guy. He has a good taste, he´s extremely talented and he was fucking rich even before he started that band.

I can find redeeming qualities in most of the bands listed in this thread, but these two are a great pick. They both make horrible music that combines the worst elements of other genres that I like. I don't know about LB's politics, but they feel like toxic masculinity incarnate, and Kid Rock has shit politics. I can say "Sure ___, but...." about many of these other bands, but these two are total bullshit.

Foo Fighters are boring-sounding, which is absolutely the last thing music should be. Bush, too, from that era.

Live and Shudder to Think always rubbed me the wrong way and seemed really pretentious back then, and were unavoidable for a while.

Kiss are infantile, squandered their allotment of riffs and made an awful man, Gene Simmons, rich and famous.

But Kiss can't hold a candle to pants-shitting serial child rapist Ted Nugent in that regard, and his band is duly condemned with him.
