As mentioned before in the tshirt thread...
Just got the ol’ layoff notice from my Covid testing job. Time to cast a rope out. Extend those feelers. Bait that hook.
I’ve got a lot of production, sales, and customer service experience. Not much of an education, but I’ve been around the block a few times. I enjoy music and being a musician. I love to travel.

2Good call. Was considering doing this too - thanks for beating me to it.
To reiterate from the t-shirt thread, Discogs has a bunch of open positions right now, across many areas of the company.
I'm the hiring manager for some of those in Engineering, but happy to answer what I can about the other jobs.
Good benefits, fully remote.

3I check your postings frequently and the (dev) positions are usually a tad out of reach experience-wise but maybe someday! But I get confused by stuff like this:brephophagist wrote: Fri Jul 09, 2021 11:28 am Good call. Was considering doing this too - thanks for beating me to it.

4I just got laid off as well - totally out of the blue. I was the first employee of a new team, asked to build the team from scratch to support a new US Network and the products being sold in the US. Hired, trained and managed a team of 17-20 engineers from start up/nothing to 24/7 production on a shoestring budget. Sourced and built the only functional CRM system the company has, again under budget. Had perfect quarterly reviews, came in under budget every month, never had a customer complaint, and took on work from other teams when they needed help. Team has been humming along through the last year or so without a single real problem outside of the normal shit associated with 19 people on a 24/7 shift schedule, so I guess the thinking was to drop the architect and leader of a team that’s perfectly functional and not costing anything? I just got a new boss under a new organization a couple of months ago, and I also don’t harbor any notion that capitalism makes sense, so who knows what the fuck.
Anyway, will probably lay low for a while and enjoy some time not worrying about shit then see what happens. Honestly, the biggest thing is losing insurance - my wife is self employed and was on her own plan, but me and the kids were all on mine. She lost access to her other plan at the same time (long story - she sold a business to finance a new one) and we were planning on adding her to mine - obviously that’s not happening now. The first quote we got was for somewhere around 2300/month. She had cancer and was in pretty serious treatment from 2016-2018, and wants to stay on a plan where she can get access to all her old docs since they want her to take certain treatments for the rest of her life regardless……
Sorry - at any rate, bookmarking the thread lol.

5As someone who's been a remote employee for a few different companies, I've seen this before. It has to do with complying with various states' labor laws, and (potentially) having to collect sales tax, among other things. If you're the only employee in a certain state...the company would have to spin up a whole lot of legal compliance in order to make it work. If you're not the only employee in that state, then that work is already done, so...it's easier.penningtron wrote: Fri Jul 09, 2021 11:52 am But I get confused by stuff like this:

6Yep, Maurice nailed it. FWIW some of the experience requirements might be stated a bit higher than we're actually looking for, just because the job postings haven't been updated yet. for the (3 positions open) software engineer role, I'm the hiring manager and we'd go as low as 3-4 years of experience.Maurice wrote: Fri Jul 09, 2021 12:23 pmAs someone who's been a remote employee for a few different companies, I've seen this before. 7My employers' firm is currently searching for a Senior Audiovisual Consultant for our Grand Rapids location. Location within about 4+ hours of GRR is fine for now.
We're looking for someone with client development/client relationship skills, as well as design/specification of systems, ability to coordinate with architects/engineers, project management, plus some ability in using Autodesk Revit, AutoCAD as well as EASE modelling software.
Experience designing audiovisual systems for performance venues - PACs, auditoria, theaters, etc.., plus corporate conferencing/collaboration spaces, conference/convention centers, healthcare/med-simulation, schools, higher-education, sports venues (e-sports and immersive systems a plus), etc... is necessary.
A four-year degree in technology/design/engineering is great. A CTS-D and/or CTS-I certification is better.
If we have any AV consulting or integration nerds here who are interested, PM me and I'll send you the details.
Cheers!
