My local shop and vendor, Main Drag Music, is celebrating their 25th anniversary today with an open house and swap meet kinda deal. I'm manning a table as a builder just to chat about my shit and also selling a couple of one-offs from the past that I have kicking around. While I was at it I whipped up a quick driver with some on-hand items. A muff that's not a muff....low gain "Russian" style setup with softer clipping and a treble roll-off instead of the scooped BMP stack.

Near-complete gut job, kept the existing iron and chassis. Replaced the circuit with a more traditional BF style preamp, with a proper master volume and cathode biased 6L6 output stage. Like the big brother to the BF-15s that I've made before. Fantastic clean tones that compress beautifully as you drive it hard.

It's just not necessary, it's extra wires, switches etc.
Agree. I put them on some stuff, depending on the specific design, but they're never necessary.

correct. A much younger me found myself asking the same question - so I started playing one of my amps never using the standby, and nothing bad ever happened, and my tubes lasted a lot time - so I concluded that the position of "it does nothing to save your tubes/amp" accurate. Not scientific, but there you go.
