Day 1 was compelling, though I'm pretty sure many of the ones who should be watching this and taking it seriously are not doing so.
I thought it was powerful that Liz Cheney did a lot of the talking. I still cannot believe that the republican party has gone so far off the deep end that once-republican royalty such as Liz Cheney is persona non grata. I disagree with her on almost every political topic except opinion of Trump.
Re: January 6 Hearings
12The way voter suppression is set up, there’s sadly nothing to be gained even if one or two of the elected MAGA creeps got impeached as a result of this. They have legions of even more awful people to take their places.
Re: January 6 Hearings
13From time to time I think about the irreparable harm Gerald Ford did to our country by pardoning Nixon. Not only by ensuring no president will ever face consequences for their actions, but also if he hadn't done that he probably would have been reelected, and the malaise of the Carter years would have fallen on him, making it so Reagan wouldn't have gotten elected in 1980.DaveA wrote: Thu Jun 09, 2022 8:13 pm Echoing others' sentiments: just 'cause heads should roll doesn't mean they will.
It's interesting, because since around when Trump took office I've seen Watergate bandied about a good deal, sometimes with Woodward and Bernstein themselves as panel guests. And yet, when since then has a top-ranking U.S. official been prematurely ousted or gone to jail? It's happened to mayors, occasionally, sure, but no POTUS since Nixon has been ex-communicated from political life. Rather than Watergate being a precedent, in legal terms, the way things have played out, it seems like more of a fluke.

14That's an excellent point. No one ever cites Gerald Ford as the architect of democracy's demise.

15This is absolutely true. For example this absolute chud one notch south of us.biscuitdough wrote: Fri Jun 10, 2022 12:27 pm The way voter suppression is set up, there’s sadly nothing to be gained even if one or two of the elected MAGA creeps got impeached as a result of this. Guns, God, and Babies, amirite? I mean who doesn't like that? I really feel that misanthropy is as big a danger as anything else we face as a society...and yet the fact that a sentient being would see this and put that 20' sign in their yard. Absolutely horrifying to just keep watching these people sink deeper and deeper.
JFC. Dude literally on his page of what he stands for says he's pro-life but then later down the page makes a supportive stance against vaccination saying it's "people's rights to decide what to do with their bodies." I'm not even kidding, you cannot make this shit up.
Re: January 6 Hearings
16Do you think it would have helped clarify matters if they had actually hanged Mike Pence? Sadly we will never know.
Re: January 6 Hearings
17The heads that I want to roll won't, but some might. I am exhausted with the voices calling this presentation of what occured the months leading up to and including the insurrection a farce or theater.

18If by "clarify matters" you mean "make me nut" then yes. Shame.Anthony Flack wrote: Fri Jun 10, 2022 4:45 pm Do you think it would have helped clarify matters if they had actually hanged Mike Pence? Sadly we will never know.
Re: the original question: Charlie Brown, Lucy, football, repeat.
As to why, it's a distraction from the fact that Dems are doing nothing of value.
Re: January 6 Hearings
19A good point. There were mixed messages, there was inconsistency there. Nixon getting ousted but then pardoned. Hmmm. Like, you'll get in trouble for that shady shit, but not too much trouble--we'll be soft ultimately, as we want to leave things open for future presidents, so they don't have to worry about actually spending time in jail cells for potential misdeeds. And our constituency will now know we half-stepped, undermining their belief in us, which as you say in the case of Ford, was/is a losing strategy.Jimbo wrote: Fri Jun 10, 2022 2:25 pmFrom time to time I think about the irreparable harm Gerald Ford did to our country by pardoning Nixon. If Watergate was a precedent of sorts, if nothing else, it may be that in the powers that be behaving that way afterwards, going forward, presidents were indeed tacitly assured of being insulated somewhat, beyond whatever shame/outrage came their way, even if they were dethroned like Nixon. Clinton knew he'd never do time for perjury, Bush Jr. knew he wouldn't be prosecuted for war crimes/starting a war on false pretenses, etc. (Of course, in the latter case, though, if Obama had gone hard and held Bush accountable that would've created a HUGE clusterfuck for him, least of all because most Democrats went along with it at the time, the war.)
Re: January 6 Hearings
20The good news here is that Trump can't shut the fuck up with his retorts (throwing Ivanka under the bus WTF), and is probably undoing some of the (smarter) 'nothing to see here, folks' approach of the GOP and right wing media. I still don't expect any major arrests but maybe this has a chance to do some lasting political damage. God, I hope..jfv wrote: Thu Jun 09, 2022 10:12 pm Day 1 was compelling, though I'm pretty sure many of the ones who should be watching this and taking it seriously are not doing so.
