Re: Upcoming shows in Chicago

Hey, I'm playing some songs at Comfort Station in Logan Square on Thursday. 730PM music starts.

I didn't play electric guitar for a year and a half during the pandemic. It was too depressing. I just played little acoustics that whole time.

So I think I'm gonna just play one of those and be super quiet. I'll also be in the fetal position the entire time.

The other set is Jeff Kimmel, of whom I knew nothing until today.

He plays clarinet, mostly bass clarinet I think? Anyway I liked what I heard and I think he's playing before me so maybe come early if you come.

This country has a lot more work to do. Moving in the right direction requires serious effort and extensive self-reflection. The Hideout's kneejerk response was a grouping of corporate speak that sounded more like the handling of a PR exec and not a group of people who have been serving Chicago's music and political community for years.

Am I a bad person for thinking this reads like a millennial who is ill prepared for the harsh reality of a gig at a night club run by grizzled old white people? I mean I have seen the films Roadhouse, CBGBs, and Killing of a Chinese Bookie, all depicting working conditions at clubs run by old white people, and from those depictions I would not expect much civility, much less a severance package and continued health care coverage following being laid off after 8 months.

^Both can be true. That person could have been a shitty employee, unable to handle the workload, AND the Hideout could be out of touch and indifferent to its employees.

The part about the stress level of booking 30 shows per month did have me rolling my eyes, but at the same time, the Hideout has always seemed like a 'scene' to me, where the owners have had zero interest in booking music that didn't fit their honky (tonk) aesthetic. I've been lucky to play there, but they've all been shows booked by people who are tight with them.

Basically agree, but also you own a bar or restaurant because a) you are insane enough to think it's a good idea and b) you want to do your own thing and fuck everybody else.

Every great bar or restaurant is the product of a vision, always self-centered, often idiosyncratic, sometimes clueless, occasionally maniacal, and the Hideout--a great bar--is no different.

I can't make any representations as to how hard it is to work there specifically, but the music industry is a meat grinder, and booking shows would fucking suck from where I sit--I can't even do it for one band. Doing it anytime in the last 2.5yrs? Forget it. Brutal. I feel bad for everyone involved as far as that goes.
