I saw this mtv footage of the little cunt doing a 'comedy' (and i use the word in its loosest possible sense) dance to 'vogue' - made me puke there & then.

Their songs are the most putrid attempt to sell as many records to the middle aged, middle classes who think they are 'serious about music' as they can. There is nothing to like about this band - they are fucking horrible.

Well, why don't you tell us why their music is crap instead of talking about him writing messages on his hand and doing a little dance. What does that have to do with their music anyway?

But speaking of writing messages on his hands... if that's what he does, then what is it to you? If that's his way of getting his message across, then hell, we can surely see that it works. YOU took notice of it, didn't you? And if you think that's stupid to do, then what would you suggest? Is a message on the hand really a means for calling someone silly names?

For a person who doesn't like him very much, you certainly like to watch tv whenever he's on, or perhaps read a magazine with him in it? For knowing about the message thing and the little mtv dance thing (which, me, being a fan of Coldplay, I did not know), one would think you to be a Coldplay fan.. but since you so ardently oppose them, all that's left is confusion.

'Serious about music' ... what does that phrase mean? What constitutes being serious about music, to you? What bands do you consider 'Serious' bands?

We're talking about music here... if you want to tell us why, musically, you don't like Coldplay, then go right ahead... but by talking about everything BUT their music, you're not helping the thread at all.

Colplay = Not Crap.

In Parachutes, Shiver puts forth the energy of Coldplay with melodic guitars and emotion in the vocals...not to mention the energy in the drums as they carry the 6/8 time.

Then you have songs that slow the pace down; songs such as Sparks, Trouble, and We Never Change. These songs are mostly carried by the bass, piano, and vocals, with the drums keeping it light.

Then in A Rush Of Blood To The Head, songs like In My Place, Clocks, Warning Sign, and A Rush of Blood To The Head bring back the same melodic feel you got from parachutes, while at the same time, keeping it freash and in its own way, unique.

Again, there are those slower songs, that have a mellow feel to them such as The Scientist and Amsterdam.

These guys are great musicians, in my personal opinion, and are to be comended for their talents.

while i'm not as well versed in coldplay as blearyeyedme, i agree with him that they are talented in writing music. as far as political messages go, i pretty much always ignore the asinine comments that today's artists make...i listen to politicians if i want to hear politics, and i listen to musicians if i want to hear music. if a political message is a part of a song, that's a different story.

however, coldplay is a refreshing change of pace when all else that's played on the radio is a bunch of monkey growls and god-smacks.

Well, Jupiter, I would then propose this to you: what is your idea of good music? As Yushbombn commented on something about 'serious music', I then asked them to explain what they thought constituted something as 'serious music' ... Explain your broad statements... if they're boring, tell us why you believe them to be so; if they are not serious, expand upon that so we can understand why you hold that opinion. Do you see what I mean? It's all fine and dandy to say what you think; after all, we all have different opinions and certainly we're not all going to agree on similar musical tastes. However, if you should dislike a certain band or musical style, you should be easily able to explain to someone why that is.

I hope that makes sense to you all.

Records without fillers. Their music is really uplifting for me. I found a lot of beauty in their songs and i dare to like them although it seems to be forbidden. Definitely Not Crap, and a good live band as well.

I worked at a record store for 3 or 4 years and always managed to ignore the band. I've even told some friends that I didn't like them just because I always associate them with english-NME-hyped-indie-schmindie-pop poo.

During last year's tape-op conference in Portland/OR I went through a couple of record shops and in one of them they played the last Coldplay record. I have to admit that I really liked it then. So I went to the girl who was working there and told her: " I've to admit that I really like this. Coldplay, isn't it?".
I'm not sure if I've listened to Coldplay again since then.

These guys do seem pretty bland. This overproduced, heart-on-your-sleeve music doesn't last long for me - I'll hear the single(s) out in the ether & sometimes like what I hear, but if I actually buy the record (this has happened with radiohead) I'll listen twice & never again.

Making political statements is not a requirement for selling more records; and writing slogans on his hands is NOT the only political action the guy has taken. You may think his politics suck, or that planting mango trees in India & trying to get people interested in environmental issues etc. is a waste of time; but surprisingly few high-profile musicians go out of their way to make political statements, or even endorse easy-to-swallow environmental causes. I'd give him some credit for bravery long before I'd accuse him of pandering to a "retarded student fanbase."

I can jibe with this statement. I was sickened to tears by the "Yellow" song from the first album, but, having a girlfriend I've had many opportunities to listen to the second album. In fact it's a top ten for her.
She made me a copy that I didn't listen to for months. When I finally did, I think it was because I had recently heard "Clocks" on the radio, and the drumbeat was on a loop in my head.

I didn't know what the name of the song, so I put the disc in and let it run for a bit. The first track came on, and I listened for a good piece, deciding that it was a pretty good song, surprisingly, but not the one was looking to hear. FWD to the next track, same experience, and more of the same through "Clocks," which is the fifth song on the record.

It is a very good record, not a great record, you aren't in for any surprises, but once you get the space that Coldplay operates in, there is good to be had, much like REM or Built to Spill. That is not a musical comparison.

So again, better than most popular music, not mind-blowing, not crap.

Then again, I've known environmentally sensitive guys whose political stance seems as pretentious as the perpetually earnest look in their eye, who seem outspoken as much out of "bravery" as out of the knowledge that the ladies love a rebel. I'm giving Coldplay the benefit of the doubt, but thinking about this I started having some doubts.
