However, I never got more because of the friction of having to special order. Then a friend got a job at Dunlop, so I got a fantastic deal on DUnlp strings in bulk. They felt a little more coarse than the D'Addario strings, and didn't last as long for me, but the price was so good. It was fine.
See, I always found D'Addario rougher-feeling than Ernie Ball or GHS.

Does anyone have experience with flatwounds on electric 6 string? Listened to an interview with a guitarist who mentioned that he used them and I'm curious what the benefits/pitfalls are. I would guess they would take the edge off high frequencies and somewhat change playability, but I have zero experience so I am a little intrigued why someone would choose this route.

Yeah its a whole different thing. The attack almost sounds compressed in some respects and the lower strings are a little thuddy, so they don’t necessarily do that low country twang thing.

It makes your guitar sound very “vintage” but traditional lead guitar sounds sort of go out the window. You can still do all sorts of stuff on them.

I have an EGC standard guitar with light flatwounds on them - i think they’re 10’s. Its a good middle ground for messing around. They’re sort of expensive as strings go but it’s worth a go

This is really interesting to me as someone who works (part time) in a guitar shop, and as someone who has teched for 'guitar god' types.

The typical hobby player worries a lot about strings, they use oddball gauges, expensive brands, odd windings, etc. They seem very motivated around this.

The work boxes out on big tours are full of Ernie Ball regular slinky and D'addario 10's. No one at that level uses anything but the most standard, stock strings. Part of this is because strings are getting swapped out every 1-2 shows, part is because they need to be able to find/buy/order their strings no matter where they happen to be. The biggest part is that these things really don't matter.

Way different feel of course but through the bridge it still sounded pretty Strat-y (of course it did..). I was doing a lot of sliding up and down frets for a while and it was nice to minimize squeaky noises.
Flats on my jazzmaster gave it instant Dave Davies tone. It was pretty cool. Ive thought about keeping a guitar set up with flats all the time. I like flats on my Fender acoustic bass too, though that thing has terrible intonation past the 5th fret.

Eh.. a lot of grey area there. Sure.. I got acquainted with Vic Firth 5As and the most basic singly ply drum heads when I toured, because I knew stores anywhere would have them. That doesn't mean I won't try other things on recordings, or just for my own curiosity/amusement at home. I'm sure players in those touring bands are doing the same thing when they're at home or have the time to experiment.

Plus, how does sponsorship factor into all that? I'd use boring ass Super Slinkys exclusively too if they were paying me.

Past what got mentioned here...

This is probably worth taking a bit of time to watch if the idea of flatwounds interests you.

Now, past even that?

Playing slide on flats is also in interesting corner of every single option that you have as a person with a guitar. Don't know that I thought it was for everyone, but it certainly held my interest for a bit.
