The ones I've had were plain, or maybe lightly salted? You dip them in hot chocolate, and were great. However I've seen them in the UK sold as (basically) doughnuts, and I think they were dunked in sugar. Bleurgh.

I get it, but..

Christmas market in Nuremberg.. warm spiced wine.. 35F.. light snow.. no wind.. wood fire.. least sucky thing ever.
Seconding. I loath hot booze at the best of times, and mulled wine tastes like shit. But one deep frozen winter in Berlin at a Christmas market back in early 2010 and I swear it was the nectar of the gods.

I have really fond memories of the Christmas markets in Prague, but I only tried the spiced wine once. It was enough for me to know.
