>was it really shit

Well, as a fan of the Libertines I doubt you'll get much out of it although there is quite a bit of backstage footage however, it was astonishing television. I'd strongly encourage you to watch it. The short review from today's Guardian hardly does it justice but gives you an impression of what to expect:

I found Stalking Pete Doherty (Channel 4) more problematic. Max Carlish was that "film-maker" who was making a documentary about the ex-Libertines front man. But they fell out and Carlish ended up selling pictures of Doherty taking heroin to a tabloid newspaper, for which he got £20,000 and a well-publicised black-eye. So this was a documentary about the documentary that never happened. Some of it was Carlish's own footage, and he was also interviewed for the film. Doherty unsurprisingly stayed clear of the whole thing.

My problem with it is that Carlish clearly may have mental-health problems. He admits to being bipolar, and there were a couple of scenes - his manic dancing to Electric Dreams while miming injecting drugs into his arm for example - that, if he was well, he may not have felt comfortable about putting on the telly. The whole thing felt a bit dirty.

I'm not really sure about Carlish's mental state during filming but he seems to have contrived a presentation style somewhere between Alan Partridge ('This is rock and roll...It's like the Teddy boys'), Avid Merrion ('Fighting is like fucking really...We'll always have that connection') and the obsessional bus-stop loon (most of it). He's written for the Idler before now and seems to make a virtue of self-vilification. That said, some scenes were really beyond excruciating - blubbing into the camera mid-breakdown singing along to Jerusalem, presenting a nonplussed Doherty with a tiny guitar shaped key ring in an attempt to win back his affection. Lawks! I could go on..

Cranioose - if you're comfortable downloading torrents I think it will be 'up' at UkNova shortly.
