Re: Good, lesser known horror movies
411Hellbender was quite good. Some rough edges but they didn’t detract, more like hearing a sloppy chord in a live recording.
sparkling anti-capitalist
+1
Agreed, Hell Hole was very disappointing. It felt amateurish [derogatory] rather than amateurish [laudatory] and lacked chemistry between the actors. The daughters weren't in it either and they're very good!
Watched Oddity again and my position has changed to a solid not crap. Everything hit stronger watching alone at home. What a spooky little film and definitely a fun one. Couple of phenomenal sequences: 1: when Yana gets spooked by Dani's ghost and runs from the house 2: Ivan's comeuppance via the wooden man. Just as with Caveat I was fully immersed, body scrunching, insides screaming no but also maniacally giggling like on a roller coaster.Bluegum LaBloat wrote: Mon Sep 02, 2024 7:14 pm Found Oddity stagey and airless, which is weird because Caveat had a terrific mood, even though it had an equally pedestrian, though less fussy, 'Tales of the Unexpected' type story. I suppose in general I don't like classic/corny horror cliches, or filmmakers who say they enjoy 'playing' with them [vomit], but at least something like 'Inside Number 9', which this reminded me of, is funny. Musty stuff.
Watched Oddity tonight. It was fun! Very gothic in the old school sense. Good fun. Stuck the landing, which is the main issue I see in horror movies recently.rsmurphy wrote: Sat Sep 28, 2024 12:48 pmWatched Oddity again and my position has changed to a solid not crap. Looking forward to The Substance and Daddy's Head
Thanks for this!brephophagist wrote: Tue Oct 01, 2024 8:09 pm Maybe stretching the thread a bit but I really like the dread-inducing style of this artist Briscoe Park, who posts videos of nighttime flashlight explorations in dilapidated houses and such:
His still photography has a "Clarence John Laughlin listening to Midwife" kind of vibe.
This isn't gothy but it's kinda cutesy, tasteful, funny, and bloody. A teen coming-of-age horror comedy amidst a high school where people start spontaneously combusting all over the place. I dug it!My partner and I both like cutesy goth comedy horror when it's done tastefully, and Humanist Vampire Seeking Consenting Suicidal Person fills that bill. If you found Lisa Frankenstein overbearingly referential & cutesy but otherwise fine, then you might like this one more.
Don't remember too much from Influencer but I remember not liking the ending, like, not at all.Better than I thought it would be, but my expectations were super low: Influencer
People keep big-upping this movie but I watched like 10 seconds of the trailer and it looked so chintzy. I like to be proven wrong in these occasions but your write-up bolsters my hesitation with it.Worse than I thought it would be, and my expectations were still super low: Beezel
Your instincts were better than mine. The basement witch looks pretty good for a movie with this low of a budget, but that's the best thing I can say about it. The "multiple time periods" thing got me interested, but it didn't pan out. Dumb jump scares, director's wife plays a lead role featuring gratuitous sex scene... it's nothing special.rsmurphy wrote: Wed Oct 02, 2024 10:12 pmPeople keep big-upping this movie but I watched like 10 seconds of the trailer and it looked so chintzy.
