ErikG wrote: Sat Apr 13, 2024 10:49 am Man, people really knew how to give birds properly awesome names.

I wonder how many metal bands out there are called Carrion Crow. With a dungeon synth side project called Treecreeper.

There should be a thread where you present a list of 3-5 ridiculous bird names and one has to determine which are real and which are fake.

Birds are cool!
Fake bird name generator. I got a "Turquoise House Eagle". Most are less cool than real bird names, though:

Could also do this with GBV song titles.

Dammit!

I even posted in that thread.

At least didn't start another new thread for it.

Well, I just watched what I believe to be either a Cooper's Hawk or Sharp-Shinned Hawk pick off and eat three small birds around my backyard feeders. Hawk ate just about everything and all that was left was three piles of feathers. Photos are subpar as usual.

ID is based on tail markings.

I'm torn. The hawk is cool to see up close, but they're feeding on other birds at my backyard feeders. It's like I'm baiting the little birds.
oh, that would have crushed me.
hawk's are very cool, we just saw one on a walk by the river over here. i do wish they would pick off some of our more obnoxious (human) neighbors...
but yeah, i feel very protective and fond of the little birbs. we don't put out feeders, but my folks do and i was over there house-sitting last week. so many sweet little friends. i don't think i've ever seen (or maybe i just haven't noticed) so many tufted titmice! i even wrote a song with one of them :O

Holy shit. Just drove back home from Minneapolis. White pelicans are currently migrating through the area. They are EVERYWHERE. I have never seen so many. Seemingly every substantial body of water in western Lake County has them right now.

Will try to get pictures before they leave the area.

I was in your neck of the woods a couple weeks ago and saw a few of these guys. I also enjoyed the call of the great-tailed grackle.
