Let me guess, you like Everclear, don't you?
walter I'm gonna give you a small list of five albums that you need to go out and buy or download just so you can get a glimpse of what good music sounds like.

John Fahey - The Yellow Princess
This Heat - Deceit
The Silver Mount Zion Memorial Orchestra & Tra-la-la Band - Born Into Trouble As The Sparks Fly Upward
Can - Monster Movie
Captain Beefheart & His Magic Band - Safe As Milk

I personally own all these records just so you know that I'm not trying to blow smoke up your ass. Just get these and write me a full report of what you think of these records. Also if you like good hip hop get Beauty and the Beat by Edan. Easily the best hip hop I've heard in a coule years. Honestly, I need to stop listening to it.

Wow, Captain Beefheart and Can... original. (wait, vomit, ok.) Angriest, haven't I met you? Cause I know I've denied like 10 dudes (usually obsessed with one or more of their cooler friends' tastes, that's where can beefheart wire and gang of four come in) who fit yr description. So wait, I don't get the bad date potential rachael thing. see i thought a bad date idea would be like... sayy... leaving yr number for a yr server cause you thought it would be funny and him calling you 75 times the following day, counts as bad. or... someone suggesting murder-suicide was bad... or... being really really into new order/joy division/on and on was really really really bad... but asking you to an everclear show and talking about how he likes to match his shirt to pumas? maybe i'm talking to the wrong crowd of dorky dudes but, i see no pain in my boy bein' hyped on (in his case) his matching shelltoes and black shirt. it's sorta sweet. and i like everclear. i think they're great.

you mock Can and the Capp'n (is that what you did? I saw the word Vomit...) and think everclear is great?

I'll admit that the list there is a standard type of "best 5 records" and has the trappings of faux variety (i aint knocking it) but it does stand up as some goddamn great records. The first Can? Thats an amazing record with Malcom Mooney (father can not yell...)? EVERCLEAR?!?

And i'm gonna slap my father if you dare even make a retort in the vicinity of This Heat...

i'm gonna go with "because you're meeting them while you're shitfaced in a bar". what do i win?

hey i got no fault on can or beefy, etc. if you got to know me better (which you won't) you'd see my tastes are wicked exceptional and honed after years and years of diligent focus. however, i dare not mention certain records among the general public because a) who cares b) who cares and c) who cares! i get it if it's in the context of something specific to the band in mind (if the ref serves a purpose beyond highlighting yr own semi-obscure tastes), but just general listings involving the capt or like... god... suicide or young marble giants or something (thank you for not going there) is just sorta self-satisfying. maybe it's just me, but i'm not impressed. it's easier to understand folks who just go with what they know from whatever (everclear, hell even shitty ass smashing pumpkins) cause at least they're not afraid of a catchy melody and song that doesn't involve coming up with a family tree of music references for the sake of their own neurotic need to be another 'tardly meltzer or bangs.
