I guess not much of a story beyond me buying a Tele at Guitar Center with a typo and not even noticing it for several years. Good guitar otherwise! (Nashville Tele, err.. Tee)

Those roller string trees are pretty decent. They make more sense on a guitar with a trem but I've definitely experienced snagging with the standard ones.

Speaking of Teles, I was pricing out a custom tele from the Mod Shop, and then I saw this 1981 version that has a lot of what I am looking for.

It has some small modifications (seems like those were done in the 80s), so it's not to spec of a true vintage. Considering that generally this guitar vintage generally goes for $3k or higher, it's nice to see the value down. I talked to the seller and I could probably wittle it down to the same price as a mod shop. So it's really a question of vintage vs new. This one seems to have been taken well care of, and the seller seems to be more like a broker selling equipment for aging or dead musicians. His collection is really nice. I've bought vintage gear before and my only concern would be fret wear, cuz who wants to take on a fret job after spending that kind of money... but shit, if it wouldn't pair well with my 1977 P Bass...

All I’ve ever bought was vintage guitars and I don’t think fret wear is that big of a deal compared to anything else that could come up. I’ve had more issues with people fucking up the nut or weird electronic buzzing that would never go away after a hardtail conversion, and that’s not subtle stuff. You’ll know when you get the guitar.

Anyways, I like Tele Deluxes, but that neck swap is going to hurt the resale value. Resale value is one of the best reasons to buy vintage. That thing has been listed for four months and who knows how long you would have it up if you decided to sell.

There’s a comparatively priced one here that is probably a better deal if its not covered in cat piss, and that one has been up for 6 months. Natural guitars are always cheaper. Fuckin lowball em.

A modern parts guitar is probably still a bigger waste of money, though.

My concern is that a Tele Deluxe has a rounded neck heel with a three-bolt neck and micro-tilt adjustment, and that Tele neck would have had a square heel on it. I would imagine that there was either some sort of additional neck shaping or some light chiseling done to the body (in addition to drilling the additional holes for the neck.)

If you're thinking "I'm going to keep these forever", then by all means go for it - these are very slight mods you won't notice when you're playing, and this guitar looks awesome. If you're thinking "I want to try this out and flip it", I think you could run into issues dealing with tire kickers down the line.
