I couldn't really hear the subtlety of the 8 string bass notes being slightly out of key in that song with all the noise.
LOL. You have a whole other thread about building a guitar with specific sounding pickups. Why not juts get a graphic EQ? Why bother with a tube amp when modeleres sound so good now? Sometimes people want the real physical thing and that's okay.

Because that isn't in the thread about talking someone out of a purchase or making them justify it.

Why not just get an octave pedal?
I used to feel this way until I played a friends. It forces you to play in a very particular way that leads to new ideas. I mean, why have more than 1 guitar or bass at all when you can just use pedals to make it sound different. I have 2 main guitars (starfire, jazzmaster) because they play extremely different more than the difference in sound although they are polar opposites. 8 string bass through a fuzz and flanger is basically just bong rips the bass. Also, pedals that generate Octaves, harmonies, fucking sound like garbage to me. Sound like Modem Chatter. POG is the worst pedal ever made.

Here's an even cheaper way: get another bass player. Then they can help pay for rent on space and gas for shows. You might have to split the pay at the end of the night, but what's $20 amongst friends?

Then you get two extra hands, a second bass and another person to have to book all the shows. You can book twice as many shows. And, think of all the new ideas!

Yeah, but then you have to hang out with 2 bass players. The smell alone...

Wouldn't the one playing the upper octave just be a guitar player with four strings?

You could get another guitar player, then you can have even more harmonic tone while paying even less rent on space! That would alleviate having to hang out with the second bass player. Let the bass players hang out together, then the guitar players can hang out together. The drummer can hang with this weeks' girlfriend. It's perfect.
