Neomofo (to steal Joe Carducci's term for it) funkmetal.

Even the Chuck Mosley—whom I saw live during his brief, not-so-amazing tenure w/Bad Brains—era is not great. Really, really dated to me now. (As opposed to the Patton stuff, which is just cloying.)

The very weird and slightly more interesting part of the story is their earlier years, sans cock-rock guitar moves, as a postpunk-, psych-, and Flipper-influenced thing, w/people like Joe Pop-O-Pies and Courtney goddamn Love (!) singing lead. Slightly. More b/c of the historical anomaly than the actual music.

You can find some of these stillborn FNM ideas on YouTube and a lot more info in the excellent SF music history book Who Cares Anyway?

But yeah, FNM were very much part of the segue from a relatively unselfconscious '80s indie underground into a slicker, more biz-focused flavor of "alternative rock" that would flourish in the '90s. Crap, but some waffles w/dreads (of course).

I dunno, I thought Chuck Mosley was the lousiest singer I'd ever heard when I first bit into Faith No More - Angel Dust was more my speed.

But Mosley won me over in the end. Yeah, there's used car salesmen rapping with dumb rhymes, but I cannot deny his earnestness that unfolds across those albums. Same vibe as Joe Strummer, somehow even dumber and more transparent. The skate punk mentality, the metal riffs, Killing Joke lifts, goofy "funk" basslines, Jim Martin's Zappa hair, whatever small bits you wanna focus on will probably seem lame in isolation. But there's real songs there, the hodgepodge band isn't just throwing dumbshit against the wall to see what sticks (hellllooooo Mr. Bungle!)

Angel Dust is still a fine album, maybe too self-conscious in its quirks but for a post-fame album you can't do much better. Everything after that I have zero time for. I heard The Real Thing for the first time in a decade or more last month, liked it better than I remembered.

NOT CRAP, Chuck Mosley era especially

Are we gonna do Living Colour next - like what's goin' on here?

Everything you dooders post as an example of why someone should that this shit band seriously is just a coffin nail of absolution for me. This shit just sounds terrible to me. Lyrics are really dumb. Music is a mess. Execution is just tangibly unpleasant. If it was your jam in the 8th grade, I get why you still have feelings for it... I still love dead milkmen and it's... Absolutely stupid music. I'd never try to go to bat for it. It's dumb and I'm ok with it. FxM is shitty from every direction you approach it to me.

I keep waiting for DJ to bust through my door and execute me.

Are we still in an edgelord world where we Jack Black people for liking bands?

People - myself included - have posted a few tracks for people that remember Epic and think that’s it. If you don’t like them, that’s totally fine. I can easily see why people would hate them. It’s no biggie. I hate The Smiths… but I don’t think people are assholes if they like them.

Sorta.
