Seriously though, why would he consider flying? It's two hours and 45 minutes from NYC to DC on the fastest express train. That does seem kind of wasteful to fly...
This is such a bullshit line of reasoning, again placing on the individual the responsibility of reducing pollution. One can be pro environmental causes and get on a plane. Pretty sure some of us here do it.

We don't have to travel around the world for holiday. If we really cared, we'd never leave our own city.

This "argument" needs to stop.
It's just an incredibly silly, wasteful thing for a politician to do if you're living that close to Washington DC. Nothing to do w/the environment so explicitly. Given the hassles of the airport, you wouldn't even save any actual time. It's just kinda dumb.

And not a great message for a candidate who's supposedly focused on affordability and sustainability and all that. Seems a little tone deaf. Flying to DC or Boston, when we have a perfectly good high-speed train line, is something that celebrities and businessmen tend to do more than "average" New Yorkers. This plus some of his views on housing and developers make me question how in touch this guy really will be. Again, shades of Obama. (Much like Barack, he does have great taste in food compared to most politicians, I'll give you that.)

Oh dear.

You went from "kind of wasteful" to "Incredibly wasteful" and added "silly" into the mix. But, the act was only "a little tone deaf."

As mayor elect I would guess he has fewer hassles at the airport. Or maybe he's on a no-fly list?

The libs are crying that Gretchen Whitmer & Muriel Bowser weren't fawned over like this when they visited, and that the Mamdani Bros (my term, but it's implicit) have a double standard for thinking it's just great that Mamdani was friendly with Trump while calling out Kamala Harris palling around with Liz Cheney, never mind those were all different situations.

Fewer hassles at the airport? Come on now. Why don't we get the poor kid a private jet while we're at it.

Look, numerous people on this forum have bitched about how America doesn't have comprehensive high-speed rail a la the EU, Japan, or even China.

Well, there's one corridor in the United States in which we actually do. And the so-called socialist mayor-elect of NYC still opts to fly; can't be bothered to set an example. The optics are the optics. (Biden was pretty inept, but at least he famously took the fucking train.)

Dude is also keeping Eric Adams's notoriously law-and-order police commissioner, so there's that.
Politico wrote: The commissioner is a staunch supporter of Israel. She believes criminal justice laws passed by lawmakers in Albany have hamstrung the NYPD’s ability to fight crime — specifically statutes that curtailed the use of cash bail and raised the age suspects can be tried as adults. And she supports the use of a gang database that has come under heavy criticism from the City Council and civil rights advocates.

I don't know about anyone actually being mad that people weren't gushing about Whitmer, but I do know there is a common line of reasoning for Mamdani visiting Trump and Harris hanging with Liz Cheney. You're right, they're different for a lot of reasons but neither bothered me like they did some on the left. If Harris campaigning or Mamdani governing means having conversations with the other side to persuade people in earnest, I'm all for it. I've never had the chance to vote for an angel, but I'll gauge my politicians based on how they govern, not who their picture is taken with.

Sure. But those new Acelas trains from NYC to DC actually hit 160mph. Really. Tokaido Shinkansen line from Tokyo to Kyoto is 177, per JR Rail's site. No shit.
