Serious question for the "this is nothing new" voters -- can you be more specific?
Which bands, specifically, sound just like this?

My first reply on Oct. 7 said = Radiohead.

I didn't necessarily mean that as a slight. It's a relatively new band that's playing actual musical instruments. I applaud that. It's pretty much better than anything that's selling millions of records right now*

*but that doesn't mean that I'm going to buy the record and listen to it over and over and over again, or buy a ticket to see them live in a giant venue for literally hundreds of dollars when I can buy a ticket for $15 to see a better band in the city in a club with a capacity of a few hundred.

Yeah there's definitely some Yorkey warbling going on, I get that. Maybe I haven't heard enough of the guitar heavy RH, but they always seemed less rocky than this to me. Or maybe Radiohead influence is just so pervasive now...

Nigel Godrich! I’m just glad he got Cameron Winter away from the goddamn SM7B. I am sick of seeing those things.

The singer also works in some kind of weird… Dr John thing? Then he has a pretty wide vocal range. But Rufus Wainwright, Radiohead, OK, but that isn’t the whole thing. I think most aren’t willing to do more than make up their mind after watching a fucking tv mix of them, whatever, fine. Do that and keep commenting, who cares.

What they’re doing now is much different from whatever they had going on w/ their earlier albums. I am a real deal fan of the solo album, but Getting Killed has some great moments as well. If they keep it up they have the potential to be a generational talent. They’re already having a special moment as it is.

Plus, “there’s a b*mb in my car” is kind of a perfect chorus. When I first heard that song I was sad they got to it before I did.

I've been really enjoying this, the previous record, and yer mans solo LP too. Except they make me sick, all this under their belts and they're only 23/24 years old or something. Fucking outrageous.

I think I still prefer Mr. Winter's solo album.

It's funny, cause I think the solo album has just as much clatter going on. It's clearly a goal. It's like take one of the weepy Tom Waits song, minus sand paper voice, then add increasingly chaotic instrumentation and overdubs. I actually dig this formula, but I find myself wondering if there's a sturdy song in there if you stripped away the layers.

With Geese I find there's a stronger groove component to the layering. A song like "Taxes" has rhythms and percussion that make me think of Fela or early Santana. More of a rumbling engine, less of stuff falling out of a drawer like the solo record.

This all earns a B from me. I'll be curious to see where the new success and scrutiny takes him next. There has been as much buzz about "why is this popular?" as "check this out". I suppose that's what you face as a rock band that made critics excited.

Was told (once again) about the greatness of the dude’s solo album last night and I think it’s just fine. Nothing Plush’s early records didn’t do about 10x better but I can’t be too harsh to a generation that didn’t grow up with actual music writers and good record stores.

Vote is still out on the band, though I dunno if I’ll go thru the “you must listen to 50 Zappa albums to have a proper opinion on Zappa” thing for some algorithmic, parents in the industry hyped stuff. It seems kind of all over the place, and I don’t know if I’m invested enough in them as individuals or musicians to hear their take on every indie subgenre.
