Tasteful and entertaining live. The schmalze was kept to a minimum. Their guitarist grasshopper looks like he should be playing rhythm guitar in Social Distortion. that being said, Mercury Rev in recorded
form leaves me wanting for something cleaner. the drums tend to sound muddy and compressed. Most of their arrangements are pleasant with the strings and whatnot. some of the imagery (lyrics) make me roll my eyes every other song.
Something about them works in my opinion. Can't quite put my finger on what that might be.

I like them well enough, particularly Deserter's Songs, but a lot of their stuff is irritating to me. I'll give them a NOT CRAP, but with a high waffle factor for the stuff I don't like (but am still able to find things to like about) and for their association with the Flaming Lips, who I loathe.

strings synths are NOT CRAP! strings synths are pretty "swell" (i didn't know i such thing as a string synth-related pun existed...but i just found it...hoorah for me!)

and with that out of the way Mercury Rev is NOT CRAP...not the most consistent band...they have quite a bit of stuff that's just GREAT...some genuinely bad songs here and there...a lot of stuff in between...but the great stuff is really great..."Empire State (Son House in Excess)" and "Close Encounters of the 3rd Grade" are both on the same album? that spans the whole CRAP/NOT CRAP spectrum right there! (for the record "Empire State..." is about as NOT CRAP as you can get while "Close Encounters..." sinks to the far depths of CRAP...)
