Actually, if you look at any band that's good, their drummer is good.
This is almost true, except for

CRAZY HORSE (30 yrs of tub incompetence)
Wire (I still smile at his fuck-up on "12XU" when I hear that song)
Big Black

Not crap. No way.

Saw Shellac at Victoria University Orientation in Wellington New Zealand. Got to unload the gear. Got to get Steve an aspirin. Got the piss taken out of my accent by Bob. Got to drive them to their hotel. Oh, and got to see the standout live show of my still-hanging-onto-adolescent life. Who else could possibly get away with a question and answer session, invite some dude out of the crowd to play drums, and nail every crowd calling heckler with witty sound bite sized retorts WHILST delivering no-shit rock and roll.
And did I mention they rocked?

And every time an engineer asks me how I want my drums to sound I reach for At Action Park.

trainer's in the band, no way it could be crap

I'd say the drums really save that band.

:P

I think Shellac is competent all the way around. Todd Trainer is a great drummer indeed, but the guitar and bass playing certainly does it for me... Especially on At Action Park.

I really don't have much to say on this subject. I just really wanted to quote a quote, that was quoting a quote, that was quoting a quote, if that makes any sense.

Oh, yea Shellac is awesome. I wonder what steve has to say about this band?

Alright, y'all. This is getting out of hand.

I think we've strayed way beyond the intent of crap/not crap, which -- correct me if I'm wrong -- was to make folks boldly go out on a limb on bands that straddle the line. (Go back and read the original post on this.) Sure, there are some contrarians and wiseasses who will shit all over Shellac, but that's not nearly as entertaining as reading a overly rationalized justification of oh, say, why Ministry is Not Crap or the tortured and flawed -- though no doubt hilarious -- defense of a shitewad like Henry Rollins.

Shellac? This one's a pumpkin coming across home plate. No offense, but boring.

OK OK, I did put the Stooges on there a while back, but they've got that whole reunion-y thing going on, which ups the waffle factor for a lot of folks. I just wanted to see how people weighed in on that.

Ciao

While most certainly Not Crap, I have to say that the lyrics on 1000 Hurts work against them. It's an exquisitely performed and recorded album in both formats (I plunked down for the vinyl/CD combo), but the lyrics...oh G-d, the lyrics are just not happening for me. Or, rather, they're happening all too frequently in all the wrong ways.

Still, the band overall, emphatically not crap.
