they probably were. I cant use drugs anymore, but if I could I probably would have found them more boring.

Well I guess there are differing definitions of "bring it". Some must feel that the band has to jump around like David Lee Roth or something to be considered good. Some want the songs to be very different from the album versions...some want close replicas.

Whatever, it is just as subjective as the type of music you like.

The Pixies dont jump around. They have a full sound and rattle off their tunes machine-gun style. He pours his emotion in the singing of the song. That is just their style, take it or not.

I do feel that the crowd has a definite influence on the perceived impact of the band. If the crowd is rockin' this can really effect whether the band is perceived as "bringing it".

Chicago is notorious for having LAME ASS crowds that just stand there out of attitude, insecurity, just plain lameness or all of the above.

The fact that the current Pixies' shows have an abundance of old puckers and, at least in Chi, have our "great" crowds, I can see how they might not be perceived as "bringing it". Regardless of whether they are your cup of tea or not.

(Chi was not that way during the late 80's & early 90's. Wonder what happened....)

I will freely admit that when i saw the Pixies, it was on last year's reunion tour and they played the Milwaukee Theater. My lady and i had seats up a ways from the band, so hearing to-the-letter replicas of the songs and not really being able to see any facial expressions or anything other than just four folks standing around (well, the drummer was seated, duh) was a real letdown. Perhaps had i seen them in a smaller club environment back in the day, the standing still wouldn't have been as underwhelming.

Still, i saw Shellac at the Congress Theater twice, once from up in the balcony or whatever, and i never found them boring, even though they pretty much stand in one place too.

But you're right--it is subjective. That's what makes these threads fun. I do prefer bands that are as exciting to watch as to hear live, and that's why Brainiac, Turbonegro, Poster Children, Melt-Banana and the pAper chAse can be counted among my favorite live bands ever.

I've said it before, and i'll say it again.

Old 97's were the worst musical experience i have ever been subjected to.

I didn't like them to begin with, but afterwards I hated them. It was like mayonasse with microphones. Chirpy smiling mayonaise.

swerverdriver were horrid when I saw them, they got blown off the stage by spoon, thank god I got in for free on that one

People say precisely the same thing about DC, but I dont think it's really true, at least not at every show. Bands that "bring it" (and I dont mean jump around like David Lee Roth, but play with intensity, interact with the crowd in a non-phony manner, etc) get warm responses that are fueled by more than a stomachful of Schlitz.

Now, Philly, that's a rocknroll town.

I hate Philly.
