This bit has been bothering me... is there a reason EV would specify that it "must" be mounted this way? Further, is there a specific advantage to be gained from the Dietz design by mounting the speaker from the rear? Or are we just looking at something as simple as personal preference?

Here's my rudimentary notes.

3/4" ply

Outside measurements
24" tall
19.5" wide
18" deep

baffle measurements
1.5" of height to the port
1.25" sunk back from front edge of outside
port went 3.25 inches into trhe cabinet befor it opened up.

that's about it, from that you can get all the measurements for the ply shell and build the frame inside it.

Ben,

Did you measure those dimensions exactly? They seem to differ from the EV plans by 1/2" or 1/4" in some places. What I'm getting at is: Did Steve and Bob make a (presumably) conscious decision to alter the dimensions or did you just do a "rough" measurement?

Thanks for your info, it's a great help.

I used a tape measure and did it quickly so as to get out of the way of the official studio business. I may have been off a tad in the process.

Cheers!

I don't think it's preference. I think the EV plans require it to be mounted from the front to maintain the proper volume. This would explain why on the Dietz (where it is mounted from the rear), the baffle is moved forward 3/4" (the thickness of the baffle).

Good reasons to mount it from the front:

1. You can be a little sloppier when cutting the hole (I used a circle guide for my router and it's still a bit wonky - this is not trivial).

2. You can actually attach the baffle to the carcase with glue (if you mount from the rear, you are forced to use only screws [and weatherstripping tape] since you would not be able to get the speaker in otherwise). NOTE: The clamping setup to glue the baffle in is kind of a bitch. I just used screws and figured I'd glue it in later on some rainy afternoon.

3. T-nuts and machine screws are a lot easier to deal with when something shits the bed right before a show than bolts (in my opinion).

Good reasons to mount it from the rear:

1. The speaker is more protected.

2. You don't have to buy as much grill material since you can just sandwich it between the speaker and the baffle. And it's easier to install.

3. It looks cleaner, though far less tough.

Here's a miniature PDF file with the plans:

And even though you're not going to spend much time downloading it, perhaps you'd enjoy more music?

Anyhoo, here's what my finished cabinets looked like. Please ignore the clutter (and the original Dietz off to the side).

I installed two more grill offsets after this picture was taken to further protect the speaker from van damage.

I paid $60 for mine. Thank you "music go round", for not knowing what you're selling!

I paid $150ish for mine (actually just traded in some shitty Crate cabinets for it). $350 is pretty steep considering you can get the Mesa Boogies (which are essentially the same) for $200 and change.

And the "real wood" comment is a bit misleading - it's plywood (maybe it's got fir bracing inside).

Thanks.

There's a comment in the EV plans about its function - something like extending the lowest usable frequency by an octave at the price of some non-linearity in the response or something like that.

None of the versions of the cabinet I've seen use it, but these were also meant to be PA speakers (subs of sorts, I guess) and that application might benefit from it.
