Eddie Hazel is not the subject of a major world religion, and accordingly he is underrated.

Seconded. I was just about to say this when you beat me to it. Guitar interplay, the thin, not-in-your-face guitars, clever non-standard chords.
The guitarwork on many pieces from the first three albums provide a feeling of edginess I've not heard from any other band. "New Feeling," "No Compassion," "Artists Only", "Paper," "Life During Wartime" (of course).
It surprises me that David Byrne's stage presence / kooky performance art style is often the main thing that people remembere about him. Because when you hold his guitar style up to that of the main players of his time (as well as today), he comes across as being pretty damn unique, regardless of whether you like him or not.
