if it's crap to be some dude wearing their shirt at the show (according to pcu, "don't be that guy.") then it's even more crap when that guy is in the band playing the show.
laundry day? psh. wear no shirt during the show, or ever. you're in a rock band.

Back when I was performing as Toxic Spores (pre-anthrax attacks), two friends who have a T-shirt business showed up to one gig wearing Toxic Spores T-shirts they had designed, and had a few for me as well. It would have been rude not to put it on for my set, I think.

OK, remember the Verve Pipe? They did that song "The Freshman" ("We were not resposnsible ...")? Some of those guys used to live around East Lansing, Michigan, as did I at the time they were popular. One night, a friend of mine and I were going to head out for a party at a friend's house, and we decided we needed a caffeine charge first. We stopped into a coffee place, and as we were walking in, Donny, the Verve Pipe's drummer was walking out with his girlfriend. Not only was he wearing a Verve Pipe T-shirt, but his girlfriend was wearing a matching Verve Pipe T-shirt. Now I can understand that you need to do laundry and pull a shirt out of the merch bag every once in a while, but wearing your own shirt and making your lady wear one too? That's really crap.

This is something I think is very context sensitive. That is, I think you had to be in the Misfits or, as Kerble stated, the Ramones for it to work.

At times, YouTube can be a sweet and merciful master, as evidenced below:
