I will listen to the shit out of a good record, and the more I do, the more I need it. I can remember a few bands certainly that I listened to exclusively for a couple years straight. I rarely listen to things on shuffle, just because it's almost distracting. I like listening to records in full.

the shuffle just reminds me that I have full records that I haven't paid enough attention to.


embrace the shuffle. it's a beautiful thing.

it's like radio with no ads that only sucks if you have terrible taste in music.

Not bein’ so young (33), precludes this gal from havin’ a solid opinion on what may or may not happen to young people but this has always and still happens to me all the time. The 5 that seem to always come around are early Six Finger Satellite, the Jesus Lizard, Rocket from the Crypt, Joy Division & Shellac. A few months ago it was everything Stax. Then, all Constantines. Recently it was the Sword, not for the lyrics (at all), but for the music and the experience of seein’ them live & seein’ the metal kids just revel in it all. That gatefold was on top of the turntable for a month as a constant go to. Odd, not bein’ a big metal gal, but true. Now, as evidenced by the signature, its Mission of Burma. Seemingly, am often in some sort of musical fixation.

This gal's humbly put forth two cents: Go with it. Embrace it. Music is the elixir for all that ails and those that can score the ins and outs of their day; the good, the not so great and the so-so etc with music are pretty lucky (though perhaps that is a personal bias). Don’t think that it is unhealthy at all. The Fall are obviously doin’ somethin’ good for y’all at this point so go with it. They have great songs (Cruiser's Creek, Chicago Now, Telephone thing and so many more), and a vast archive to call upon for as long as you need/want to. Echo sentiments on Lungfish, too. Very under-rated.

It's totally unhealthy. Hundreds of amazing bands in my collection and I listen to nothing but the Fall. Help? I remember when this happened with Flipper and Sonic Youth. I didn't think it would ever happen again. And I know if I let it drag on I won't be able to listen to the Fall anymore.

Is this the sort of thing that only happens to young people? Do people still fall in love with bands when they're older?

I remember reading an magazine article on (English comedian) Frank Skinner where he said that he’d recently become obsessed with The Fall to the extent that he’d be listening to other stuff that he liked and catch himself think “this is good but I could be listening to The Fall” . He must be in his early 50s.

I gave my similarly aged uncle some Tom Verlaine and he went through a phase of listening to almost nothing else. I lived with him at the time and I haven’t listened to Dreamtime by Verlaine in 15 years because I just heard it too many times.

I think Hal Russell started playing saxophone in his 50s because he heard Albert Ayler.
