I love my Audioengine A2+ as computer speakers so much, I have a pair at home and a pair at the office.

However, they may be a bit anemic for synths. They tend to need quite a bit of EQ to keep the lows from rolling off too early, and if you're doing synth stuff with a lot of lows and LF modulation it may be hard to pick it out without accidentally driving it too hard.

I agree with everything you have said LOL.. just wanted to put it out there. The space I use them in is much smaller than the picture shown and is also treated to cut a lot of high end. Also some one mentioned the size of the bass driver, a 5 inch would be much better. Thank you for adding to the converstaion.

I ended up with some ADAM T8Vs but I fear they might be haunted. Below is a test patch.

I use the Genelec 8010a's and I think they are brilliant! They are about the same size as a pint glass and I'm doing some of my best mixes on them.

Can anyone tell me what the hell all this means? I happened upon that thread when searching for something else and it looks like an extremely nerdy audio forum had their $20 ribbon moment with some cheap-ish monitors.

Looks like a lot of humbug that means nothing in the real world. Just listen to music on them and do a mix or two. If you like them you like them. This level of hooha drives me nuts.

Genelec 8010A's ???

I spent a couple of years researching affordable coaxial monitors and eventually bought a pair of Tannoy Gold 7 and I'm very happy with them. They also have a 5 and an 8, but the 5 didn't have enough bass for me and the 8 are too big for my mixing room. As far as I know the overall sound quality of these models is the same, aside from the obvious frequency range differences. I got into coaxial speakers when looking at Avantones and generally seeking nearfields that are forgiving to placement and room flaws, and that don't blast me with tweeters in one spot and woofers in another sitting position.

I’ve perused the ASR forum a few times, and while I kind of appreciate the attempt to measure performance objectively and their rejection of “golden ears” audio testing, they have their own set of biases that get very maddening, very quickly. (I also don’t understand one word of the science part, so maybe it’s all wrong.) They’re useful for seeing whether those $150 headphones you’ve heard about really can measure up to more expensive pairs, or whether the $5000 headphones are all hooha, but that’s about it.

The main reviewer and many of the commentators hate analog audio gear and vinyl. (They’ll all concede that tube guitar amps are a different animal.) Again, a lot of that irks me, as there is still a role for subjective experience.

IDK if anyone is still actively looking for small nearfields, but I still use and enjoy the ik iLouds after 6 or 7 years of having them.
