Ok then! I'd say try a different guitar then.

Every Gibson guitar I have ever played has had this issue, usually on the G string. It is dead in tune at every other position but in cowboy land it is garbage. Jeffs theory seems to be the most true to me.

Put fanned frets on it.

Well, fuck, everybody. Fuck.
Can't fix without weird hacks, can't sell. Anybody want to buy a project guitar?

It's odd that I haven't seen much talk about this with other JMs. I'm baffled.

I think it literally just needs a new nut. A nice bone nut would be an improvement anyway. I'd just do that...its like an hour of work.

I wouldn't say that a compensated nut is a weird hack. Somebody should be able to carve one by hand. I have a compensated bridge on my acoustic.

True, all I meant is these things normally seem to work fine with a regular/factory nut and a setup.

I doubt you even need to go that far. Needing a compensated nut either means crooked frets/neck twist or very visible, odd fret wear (and you'd just replace the fret in that case). The fact that it's the first several frets makes me think it's not that. I think you can buy an already cut nut (make sure the string gauges suit you) and pop it in with one drop of super glue.

The tech's highly revered so I'm hesitant to throw accusations around.
I had a highly revered tech fuck up a nut on my TB 1000S and I had to buy files and clean it up myself. It’s so depressing looking for people who know their shit and care as much as you do, and this applies not only to luthiers but to physicians and gutter repairfolks and everything in between. Literally 90% of the professional services fields deserves to have imposter syndrome.
