I find both of these bands very bleh when compared to actual drone like Eliane Radigue and other in that vein.

Abstain.

I agree with most of you folks. I dig Earth more as a band (though I’m on a Sunn kick lately). But Sunn commits to drone more. So drone qua drone, Sunn. But I don’t like everything from either. Both evolve in cool ways.

I’m also think Boris is often more musically interesting than Sunn and, at their best, mix noise and drone in a way I prefer. But they have wildly varying material. I don’t dig the big hyper rock stuff. Never listened to the odd pop stuff or anime theme song stuff.

I thought that was a great record, but none of the other ones where they developed into kind if a Western take on Swans or whatever did anything for me. Sunn is cool, and even though they dismiss it as being manipulated, that Scott Walker record is the best thing either band has ever come close to.
Wait, what did they say about that record?

Earth, but it's close.

It's the sincerity that pushes it for me, not saying that Sunn's music isn't genuine but I often get the feels from Earth.

I like a couple of Earth's records but I think I enjoy Sunn O))) more, especially the couple LP's with Attila.

Sorry I think I misquoted the Sunn guys. I swear I thought they pooh-poohed it contemporaneous to the release as being unrepresentative, and there is still some indication that Anderson was unhappy that they basically played orchestra for Walker and didn't contribute fully to the collaboration with ideas. But I can't find much of anything to show this, and they seemed quite pleased in the interviews I could find.

I too recall them saying in an interview after Walker died that he had asked them to collaborate again and they had (in retrospect, somewhat regretfully) refused because it wasn't really a collaboration, Walker just wanted their 'sound' and had used them as hired hands, not in a disrespectful way, but without much or any artistic input. Also, I think it's likely Walker used their performances somewhat as samples, and re-edited at will without their involvement.

I remember Greg sounded very bummed in the way that it was more transactional in nature than expected, as y'all have alluded to here. Based on SUNN collabs in the past, I think they expected more from the experience than they really got.

But yeah, not mad or anything like that, just very different than the expectations.

Oh, and I hate voting for this, but I went with SUNN for continuity of output and dedication to the sound while including many others from disparate and like minded disciplines. I just look at the catalogs of both, and I think that SUNN has become more than they once were. I think Earth has too, and I love their more traditional records probably more than the drone ones (I go back to bees made honey a lot) but I look forward to hearing from SUNN more than Earth.

I might change my mind tomorrow.
