Funny how things weave together. All the baseball talk had me thinking of my grandfather, which had me thinking of my dad. That naturally had me thinking about cancer. And FUCK cancer.

You know, I thought of John when I found out my friend Jeremy had lung cancer. I never knew the guy, but that album, that's a really special one. God damn, I haven't listened to The Strain in some time. I haven't sat down and listened to a lot of albums this year. So much overtime. I think I'm going to pop it in the record player tonight.My friend can't even have tape on his arms, it'll take skin off (he's got CTS pretty bad, he'd tape his wrists to limit his hands' range of motion). I really don't like this cancer thing. As a concept, I find it most disagreeable.

I found "The Strain" through these boards and ultimately, through "In Utero"...And it's super well done, doesn't try too hard. Hit's hard. Great musicianship, cool sound. Props to the creators. Great album to put on when in the mood for grunge.

It's (paradoxically) easy to glaze over flagged threads but I'm glad I read that story, so cool. And I thought I was past my pedal lusting but holy shitballs that looks cool.

It uses NOS 1N695 diodes (as used in the other famous piece of Albini gear, the Interfax Harmonic Percolator) in its circuit ... some may say this is the secret to the puzzle. Tim modified the circuit to blend between different types of diodes. He used a nice silicon pair on one end, and two 695's with the addition of a NOS Russian type germanium one side on the other. This gives the 695's a more balanced volume with the silicons and an asymmetrical clipping, kind of like the Peculator. This becomes the TUBE knob as it gave the pre-amp a very tube like distortion, especially in the germanium setting with a slight amount of silicon dialed in. Tim also added a TONE switch which is thinner and raspier on the HIGH setting and more bottom end and "full" on the LOW setting. This effect is more prominent as you wind up the HURT knob up.
