Seconded Pho 888 on Argyle. 1137 W. Argyle St. My favorite Pho in Chicago. There's a curry soup there too and it's also amazing.

On the way there from the El, on the right there's a bar called the Rooster or the Red Rooster. Looks like the sort of place where you drink on a tab all month until your disability check and your social security check come in, then you turn those over to the barkeep and he gives you what's left over. If I was a drinking man, that seemed like the spot. Appropriate levels of despair and existential malaise roll out of the place like second hand smoke.

Also, when I used to live in Rogers Park, we'd get in the car and drive over to Siam Pasta over at 7416 N. Western Avenue. Oh, that's good Thai.

In summer there were mangoes at the Rogers Park Fruit Market that rivaled anything I have ever eaten. The big, red/yellow/green Mexican mangoes there were astonishingly perfect. I have picked them off of the tree in Costa Rica and had them not be as good as the ones I was buying there for $6.00 a case.

Seconded, also, the plethora of good taquerias in Rogers Park.

I liked it there until my car got shot.

That was bad, so I moved.

I was up at Moody's pub last night for the first time in years. I just wanted to reiterate, damn that's a good burger!

Instead of starting a whole other thread I have decided to revive this one with a specific question.

I will be in Chicago to work sound for some friends on February 1st and 2nd but I have decided to go up a day and a half early to have some free time in the city. This pretty much makes me responsible for three meals on my own, two dinners and one lunch. Where should I spend these three meals?

I believe I am staying at the Days Inn on Diversey but proximity is not really an issue as I will most likely be wandering as much as possible. Cost is an issue though as I am not a wealthy man. Any suggestions are welcome. I have no known culinary aversions so all ethnicities and preparations are acceptable. Thanks.

Go to the Wishbone restaurant on Lincoln Ave., a few blocks north of Belmont, at least once for breakfast. It's also a good cheap place for lunch or dinner.

I would say if you're coming here to eat you HAVE TO go to these places. This is the short list of places not to be missed. All are affordable.

Hot dougs: The thuringer here is one of the best around.

Kuma's Corner: Best Burger(period)

Mr. Beef: arguably the best Italian beef in Chicago.

I like Pequod's as well, but I've never had their deep dish.

For Mexican fast food, La Pasadita is the best in the city. A few other restaurants are part of the same chain, or at least owned by branches of the same family. De Pasada on Ashland (just South of La Pasadita) or in University Village (on Taylor, just East of Ashland), and Las Trespasadas on Elston & California (right around the corner from Electrical) are all part of this chain.

Try the chile relleno taco or the parrilladas. The burrito de carne asada is a massive steak bomb. It's awesome. Their steak is the best I've ever had at a Mexican fast food place. And their green and black salsas cannot be beat.
