The drummer in my old band had a Meinl Byzance 20" crash & 22" ride (I think they were both 'Dark's). I auditioned a bunch of Byzances while hi hat shopping recently. I think both of our conclusions were the same: they sound pretty dark and interesting for about 5 minutes, then a little harsh after awhile. He got rid of his and now plays all Sabian HHXs.I think the Meinl Classics are their cheaper line. I haven't looked into them closely but I wouldn't expect much.I ended up going with 16" Sabian SR2 hats. They're 'recycled' cymbals and they sounded better than a lot of stuff twice the price. There's an old thread on them, but it doesn't have a lot of info. I would check those out if looking for cheaper cymbals.

Try http://mycymbal.com. You can listen to the exact cymbal(s) for sale. They were out of 14" hats last time I checked, but hopefully they'll get more in.You could always just buy 2 cymbals as they don't categorize the SR2s beyond weight. A Med/Med or Med/Heavy pair is a solid combination.
