I don't see this as a problem.
I've been on stage plenty of times and had exhausted my drink supply and asked for someone to get me one. I always buy the person one when I get off.
It's better than getting off stage and going to the bar while everyone waits.

Bring extra drinks up with you, man! If I'm in need of drink, I'll:

a) go without it

b) ask someone you KNOW in a discreet manner

c) in rare instances, head to the bar

All these choices beat the hell out of asking the general audience to buy you a beer or get you a water. It's even more embarrassing when it's a bandmate. The audience is looking at them like "wha?" and you're standing/sitting there, awkwardly holding the bag.

I do bring extras but I drink them faster than I thought I would or sometimes we play for like 2 hours and there's no way...I don't know what kind of uptight audiences you play in front of but ours usually don't stand there like 'wha?' over something so silly as asking for a drink. We try and foster a sense of relaxation not uncomfortableness at our shows.

As for asking for a drink from the stage, I too don't see the big deal, but many of the bands I go see are heavy drinkers. As are their audiences.

I didn't like Wilco for about a year and a couple friends who's opinions I respected kept making me listen to them and one day it clicked for me. Since then they've been one of my favorite bands. I don't really care for the current lineup because Cline isn't a very good fit and Pat Sansone is a douchebag. I also thought their last album was pretty weak. But I think Jeff Tweedy has been one of the best songwriters of the last 20 years.

Also, Jeff Tweedy is a really nice, engaging person who will not only answer an off-the-cuff question if you ask, but be detailed and open-ended about it too.

I like Wilco

My first exposure to the band was the documentary, in which Tweedy comes off most of the time as passive-aggressive, a trait I really can't stand. Since then I've actually listened to the music and enoy it. I keep having to miss the shows, but buy the records. I like Wilco a lot.

Tweedy comes off that way because it's sort of an inside joke with the band and the fans about how much of an ego-maniac Jay Bennett was. Granted, Tweedy is an ego-maniac in his own right. But Bennett was more of a decorator of the songs Tweedy was writing. At the core, it's Tweedy's band. After Summerteeth and into Yankee Hotel Foxtrot I think Bennett got way ahead of himself and the documentary gives a rather slanted portrayal of that. The fans easily sympathize with Tweedy losing patience with Bennett's bullshit and Bennett comes off as the cancer.

The only serious question we as adults need ask ourselves after watching the documentary is "Who is the bigger tool - the white guy with dreads, or the guy who is in a band with the white guy with dreads?"
