Descendents were good. Milo Goes to College, that's good shit right there. Cali skate punk is not something I usually listen to, but I'd put them far above those other bands.

I thought about this too - like it always feels like this weird miracle that anyone in punk-adjacent or metal for that matter is able to play the same shit at 50-60 that they could at 20? I guess if you keep at it and never stop you never lose the stamina; it gets baked in. It'd take me at least a solid month or two to get back to playing the stuff I played in the 90s - at least a whole set of it at speed anyway.

Of course "young forever" is kinda part of the whole thing too. IDK. F2F and the others I mentioned reminds me of being young and enjoying music as a soundtrack to whatever I was doing, hanging out, etc vs close listening. I don't mind music that doesn't take itself so seriously sometimes (which...maybe this is not that when I think back to hearing some of the insane production stuff that was done to achieve a lot of the "precision punk" like at Sonic Iguana)

You know I want to hear about this now. Never heard the term “precision punk” but I knew what it was instinctively.

oh that was a term all us in who were more into the late 70s/early 80s stuff used to use I guess...but pretty much would characterize about all the Fat Wreck bands...most of that era's Epitaph catalog...most of Lookout records as well and then just huge explosion of derivative bands.

Sonic Iguana was a studio in Lafayette IN that was run by "Dan Precision" of 88 Fingers Louie. By all accounts a nice and decent fellow, but their production methods were very much anathema to any sort of raw and organic sound that I was ever into (again, w/ a few notable exceptions that I don't overthink because why bother).

I don't have anything super dishy but one of the stories was when The Queers (not precision punk but definitely super pop) were enjoying their resurgent comeback recorded there and would change drum heads not after each day, not after each song, but after each TAKE. This came up when I recorded a band who had a friend of a friend and got all these lightly used drum heads for nothing. No verification if this was true or not.

The other bit I remember was how Sonic Iguana was really a front-runner at that time in the whole drum-editing world. I was shocked to hear how they would quantize and replace drum hits for everything that came out - at this time Pro Tools was still conceptually new for those of us on a home-recording level and this just felt super fucking grody to me. Now it's pretty much expected and standard...and I still hate it.

Anyway, the idea was pitched a few times by a few of the bands I was in to record there and I didn't want any part of that scene.

On a side note it's wild to me how many of those terrible third wave ska bands are still touring too... Mustard Plug, Less than Jake, Reel Big Fish, etc. I have no idea who goes to these shows, I can only imagine a couple dozen goatee'd dudes in their forties wearing bowling shoes. I can't help but admire their perserverance, still pickin it up pickin it up pickin it up.

This should be NOFX in a landslide. Their music sucks. I don’t get why Offspring are winning. They’re so inoffensive on every level. They’re just there. Like a gentle breeze or light misty rain. If they are being played in the same room as me you’d have to point out to me that it was the Offspring. I guess one could argue they suck based on that but really it’s NOFX who sucks the most suck out of sucking. Fuck they fucking suck.


CALIFORNIA PUNK BAND NOFX SUUUUUUUUCCCCKKKKKSSS THE MOST

Both NOFX and The Offspring started off as hardcore punk bands, and I reckon Offspring were better (TSOL rip-off).

I never felt like checking other bands based on the snippets I've heard so to me this is between Offspring and Green Day, and for all of the Offspring sins there is something about Green Day and their stupid asshat singer that irks me to no end, the way he presents himself and the band like they have similar gravitas and epicness of U2 mixed with Pink Floyd and Bob Dyaln where in fact they're playing incredibly simplistic (in a bad way) songs with lyrics and message worthy of elementary school.

Also, I remember when both those bands were doing press tours in Poland and Offsrping dudes were reported to be nice while GD guys were sitting in a hotel smashing beer bottles againd the wall and completely uninterested in giving an answer longer than 5 words. Fuck them.

I haven't followed GD in a looooong time but I do not remember BJA ever acting like Bono or the band thinking they are U2. Maybe he/they have changed, but I think they know it's all bullshit, and, they'll take the money as long as someone wants to give it to em.

Green Day has always seems to me to not really give a fuck. No fucks to give. I like that in a "punk" band.
