People tell me Monster Magnet sucks. Fuck those people. I don't care if Dave Windorf comes across like a douche. What "rock star" (real or in his own head) isn't?

I love gimmick bands. At least in small doses. Sometimes they scratch an itch in a way that no other band can.
Includes (but is not limited to): Violent Femmes, Dead Milkmen, Primus, Ben Folds (Five), Cake, Presidents of the United States of America
Not sure if all of these classify as "guilty pleasures" but it feels like there is a commonality in their concepts that could be perceived as gimmicky-for-the-sake-of-being-gimmicky and therefore not cool.

Like'em all. Except Cake.

I honestly don't get what's gimmicky about these bands.

Yeah.. quirky, nerdy perhaps, but all those groups (even if you don't like them) are or were legit bands.
As far as unforgivable gimmick bands, I'd say something like Ok Go qualifies.

I guess it was just how I was thinking last night.
Violent Femmes with minimal drum setup and acoustic bass guitar. Dead Milkmen have a standard format but one of their most well-known songs is "Bitchin' Camaro". You don't have to say much more than "Les Claypool" about Primus. Ben Folds Five - a band trying to be kinda punk but the main instrument is piano. Cake has the trumpet and the deadpan singer. And PUSA has the guit-bass and the bassitar.
Anyway, maybe my post didn't belong in this thread. Just had a feeling that a whole bunch of you don't take bands like this seriously.
Also, at least two of these bands' drummers use tiny splash cymbals.. LOL

This channeling of the anthemic supersaw EDM/trance vibe I really should hate - it springs from some of my worst childhood music memories - but idk, something about how compact and punchy it is is immensely appealing to me, plus the melody is cute and makes me happy.
Thought it was still too much at first but I've listened to it a dozen times now.

You want to talk guilty?
My sister got me into the newest Harry Styles album and I find it to be excellent.
